Didnt this freak you out?

remeber when mary is dreaming and in the dream little mary is walking thru the plants and her mother is calling her and the then mother does some sort of turn and her hat falls off and shes like sucked into the woods and turning at the same time?

omg that scared the *beep* outta me. it was really scary
does anyone know why her mom did that freaky move?

reply

It was a dream probably focusing on how her mother never really was there for her.

That always makes me choke up because the little girl seems like she really is distressed and upset and not acting, the way she rubs her little nose is just horrible to watch. I always wonder what directors have to do to babies and young children to get such reactions from them in films. . .

I tear up every time i see that part in the movie.
Its sad how Mary unconsiously needs her mother, but her mother was never there for her.

Before too long you'll be a memory.

I'd say to get the little girl to cry, they actually had her mother on set and then leave for a moment. If you listen carefully, she's saying "mama" or something along those lines.

I'm talking to a Rasta Man about a bongo....

i remember that scene. it was weird and really dream like, very well done.

i watched this movie with my grandparents for the first time when i was little, and i remember when that scene came on, i turned to my grandfather and asked him how they got the little girl to cry like that, and he said, "someone probably crawled up behind her and pinched her on the ass." tehe. so now that part always makes me giggle because it reminds me of my grandfather saying that.

reply

bahaha. I literally laughed out loud at the comment your grandfather said!

But I do think that the mother was there on the set and left to get the child to cry.

I vaguely remember that bit... Does anyone have a link where I can watch a clip of it? Thanks!

That part always made me cry. Also that part with the dogs in Lord Craven's study when Mary finds the photos creeps me out.

reply

Yes! When I was little, that part really creeped me out! I was probably close to the same age as that little girl when I first saw this movie. I guess it was just the thought of my mother running off and leaving me alone in a strange garden that scared me. Just a terrifying thought to me.

When I was young that scene used to bother me (but not necessarily freak me out). I just found it really sad and strange.

That part has always, and probably will always, make me cry. The idea of abandoned and neglected children gets me like no other.

And yes- the turn she does was terrifying!

I saw this movie when I was ten and, yes, it freaked me out then. I'm okay with it now though. I think the first half of the film is definitely creepy at times but it's supposed to be. It's gothic literature for children (until it takes a different heartwarming turn).
