X-Files was simply serendipitous


Yes, it was serendipity that they cast both Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny. Some of the early shows were pretty good but it was the casting that made the show what it was.

Great chemistry, yes, to go along with an excellent concept and writing.

It's one of best series in US history, so they did a lot of things right.

The cast, and the fact that the decade itself was one relatively free of the sort of large scale international strife which characterized America post-9/11. Periods of peace create environments where folks start fearing being abducted by aliens and birthing hybrids, rather than being blown up by suicide bombers. As entertaining as The X Files could be, it was, as you say, a series that could've only worked in the 90s

I don't care about the cast, but the pilot showed us what this show COULD have been, then the casting would not even have mattered.

This could've been a great show, but it was watered down before it got that opportunity, and what we got wasn't even 1% as good as it could've been if...

... well, something happened.
