Why don't the Ferengi have ear holes?

It bothers me. It makes it look more obvious that it's all makeup, but also it doesn't make any sense.

It sure does look like they don't have ear canals. But according to Quark, he had EXCELLENT hearing.

In one episode he storms into Odo's office and complains about the noise he makes in his quarters when he is practicing shape shifting at night. His quarters are right above Odo's.

He says that he hates the noise he makes when he is just "oozing' across the floor in his natural state.

Major Kira asks, "You can HEAR that?"

Quark takes hold of his ears and says, "Hello!!"
The ear canals must be there, just not visible.

And I know they have that thing that can make humans understand what the Ferengi are saying. But still, it looks a little ridiculous to have ears that big without a hole for the sound to go through.

reply

As the Ferengi using their ears also for "other things", it might be that their huge ears have actually a different main purpose.

reply

But what? (Enter dramatic music here).

reply

I never got the impression they had no ear holes. I thought their ear canals just went in and turned 90 degrees back to the head at some point, but we just cant see it ... That's my assumption just looking at their ears.

reply

Obviously the camera angles during shoots make it so you can’t see the actual ear canal, but it is there—the actors and actresses had to hear during shooting too.

reply

But you can't see them at any angle.
