I love StarTrek... But I just can't get into and enjoy this show.

I remember trying to watch a few episodes of this when it was showing on TV around the same time ST:TNG was on and every episode that I did watch was something political going on and there was almost no action. And so I just never picked it up to watch right through.

Recently after having watched all of TNG, Voyager and various space bound Sci Fi series, I've tried to watch it again.
But I still find it a struggle to get through any episode. I just find it.. to be blunt, boring as s**t.

I had watched Babylon 5 all the way though and loved that show and now I'm starting to watch Star Trek: Enterprise and I find that, right from the get go, infinity more watchable than DS:9.

Even after going by a watch it or skip it episode guide it hasn't helped me get into DS9.
I've only gone into a few episodes of Season 2 before I've come to the conclusion that I just do this. I'm kind of annoyed at myself and slightly perplexed too giving all the other Sci Fi I watch.
But it seems DS9 is a no go for me..

Anyone else find this issue?

Totally agree. DS9 is a boring show. Soap opera in space. I've battled my way through to season 7, and it's really not worth it. Watch seasons 4&5 as they're pretty entertaining with only a few terrible episodes.
But the rest is unfortunately on par with the episode of Picard with the children. Only a "b" story, no action, no intrigue, just plod, plod, plod, through poorly written exposition.
It is the most boring trek by far, and I do not understand why people think it's the best. The majority of scripts are plodding, and the Dominion War is simply ignored for large swathes of time.

No. Seasons 1-2 are mostly just establishing the characters and the Bajoran/Cardassian cultures. You're quitting the equivalent of 20 minutes into a movie.

Say, do you hear that? It's the sound of the Reaper.....

DS9 is awesome, I love it, I like it more the TNG. Voyager is my favorite and I absolutely hated Enterprise. I'd rather watch DS9 all the time instead of Enterprise. If you only watched up to season 2 I can see why, it gets a lot better. The war with the Dominion is cool. I thought Babylon 5 was awesome, the first season was hard to get through but 2 thru 4 was great and I thought 5 wasn't as good as the previous few seasons. But season 1 almost made me not want to watch the rest, I'm glad I did though.

I have seen episodes here and there throughout season 4 and 5. There isn't a single one that I've liked. DS9 is just a Star Trek themed soap opera. The only "drama" is between the few boring characters that make up the cast.

You are just one of "those" people. The ones who go around bitching about TV or movies they never watched because they have some issue with it. I have met many people like that and the vast majority are prejudgemental without warrant or feel that whats in question is some how an affront to something else they like. They make claims which are usually either straight up lies or extreme twists of reality to justify what they claim. For instance, I already know there is a large group of Star Trek "fans" who claim to have watched DS9 from start to finish and claim its "crap".

But then after talking to them and listening to their objections there is almost always some bull**** involved. Like they actually only watched 1 or 2 episodes and didn't pay attention and everything else they know about the show is from reading what other people say or checking out episode summaries just to make false claims. Or they straight up didn't even try at all and are only repeating the same nonsense that other people say because they love one of the other Treks and can't stand the idea that another may be better. Or are just straight up trolls. They think they won't get caught because they say things like "Some episodes are OK, like a few in season 5" and may even repeat 1 or 2 episode titles they see other people talking about.

Now I am sure there are people that just can't get into the show, it's not their cup of tea sort of speak. But when retarded claims like "It's all drama" or "It's religious" come up it's pretty obvious that the person speaking is either trolling or never watched the show. Having it play in the background while playing Xbox or watching porn on your phone or whatever is not watching the show. If you go into it wanting to hate it you are usually going find a reason or something to harp on and accomplish your goal.

The bottom line is when someone comes in and makes the claim "I watched DS9 from start to finish and it was just boring drama pretty much the whole time" You might as well be saying "I'm one of those idjits that makes silly claims to crap on something I don't want to like and have obviously never watched the show much if at all."

And I know this. I had many friends who are Trek fans and originally didn't want anything to do with DS9 because of the claims they heard or because they were turned off in the first season. Eventually I convinced them to watch the whole series and most now love the show as the best or at least agree its way better than haters claim.

Like TNG, it takes some time. The first season of TNG, especially the first episodes, weren't all that great. DS9 lost me initially too in 1993. However, a few years back I power watched the series. Season 1 was rough to get through, and Season 2 was weaker than TNG's second season. But once they get the DEFIANT, and the conflict with The Dominion begins, it turns into a GREAT show.

To me, DS9 is like alcohol. It's an acquired, but addicting, taste.

Some people are never able to enjoy alcohol(ic beverages). But I don't pity them as much as I pity those who are never able to enjoy DS9.

Personally I like DS9 it's a lot less feel good social message group hug that rears it ugly head on the most of the other ST ... they are all good as long as you can tolerate their underlying social commentary. My personal fav is Farscape and the killed to soon Firefly.

Phil Farrand in the Nitpickers' Guide for Deep Space Nine trekkers said that when he found some DS9 episodes to be too different from what he expected Star Trek to be like thinking of them as episodes of a different series Bajor: Empok Nor helped to reconcile him to the differences from other Star Trek shows.

reply

But wasn't Empok Nor the name of the duplicate station they went to that time to get some parts? The original name of DS9 was Terok Nor or something like that.

reply

Oops! I guess I should have said Bajor: Terok Nor.
