Recently saw the pilot episode on tv and forgot Cory n Shawn had a third running buddy, but then *poof* gone! Now I just realized their other buddy Nicky was played by Squints from the sandlot movie! Dude!!!! WTF!

I think they said they were trying to find Cory a second friend, but stopped after Topanga came into the mix.

shareYeah, I think Chauncey Leopardi was supposed to play Cory's other friend throughout the series, but something happened after the Pilot episode to where he didn't do any more episodes.
shareIntially they wanted Cory to have 2 friends kinda of like the 3 musketeers. However they couldnt find the third one. So most of the lines that Shawn did was actually written for the second best friend. For example the perm episode where Cory perms his hair and Shawn mentions the sister that he never had. That line was suppose to be for another character not Shawn. Anyway, they tried several actors but none took. They used to joke and called the chair cursed because so many actors went through it. Eventually they just gave up and just made Shawn his best friend.

He was gone after the first season. I read that the writers felt that Topanga basically served as the third friend, making that character redundant.
Then they'd have storylines for people like Mr. Turner, Angela, Harley Kiner, Frankie, Sean's brother, Eric, Mr. Matthews, Mrs. Matthews, etc. So they didn’t have room for others.
