Anyone else ever get tired of Shawn's drama?

I can't tell you how many episodes where Shawn was always saying "I don't know who i'am" "I need to find myself" "My heart was ripped out and stepped on" "I write these poems to get these feelings out because i can't say them" "I don't need you i don't need anybody!".

I'm like omg dude shut up! Shawn was such a damn drama queen. Oh his dad is the janitor and he feel humiliated, his mom left, his long lost brother shows up he hates, he can't express his feelings so he writes poems, his dad dies, he leaves to find himself, he becomes an alcoholic. Shawn had more drama than anyone else on the show, it just got so annoying after a while.

Thats what i love about these high school girls, i get older they stay the same age.

He was going through a lot of tough *beep* My friend from the wrong side of the tracks bottles it all inside and once in a while he vents. Very accurate characterization of the type of person shawn is.

I understand venting. But I always thought it was insulting and offensive when he kept saying he was all alone and didn't have anyone in the whole world, especially saying it TO Cory, when he HAD Cory. Sure Cory was with Topanga, but it was made clear in several episodes how close Cory and Shawn were. Seven the Hard Way comes to mind when Feeny locked them all in the room together and Topanga was all, "unbelievable! Everyone's fighting and they're getting closer?!" "Shawn, his lover!" He and Cory were best best friends almost their entire lives and Cory was there for him through every and anything and vice versa. It was extremely insulting to me when Shawn kept saying he had no one at all, not even an "except for you, Cory". It felt like playing the victim role - I mean he DID have a really hard life, don't get me wrong, but he did have at least one very important strong anchor in his life, assuming of course there actually was not one other person.

the purpose of venting is that you stop the venting sooner or later.

shawn never ended his venting. he chose THE WORST POSSIBLE TIMES TO VENT OR TELL HIS FEELINGS! the wedding, his father, angela...

and here is where god helps those who helps themselves. he never seeked therapy. he always TALKED about it, but we never saw any proof that he was in therapy.

OH THANK YOU GOD! THANK YOU SO BLOODY MUCH!!! Basil Fawlty

I have to say that I actually liked it. It's rare to see a character go through as much as Shawn did between living in a trailer, having his dad leave, his mom not be his mom, his relationships, Cory being his only real friend, not having a stable home life, etc. and be so emotionally messed up as he was and have that showcased a lot. I actually really liked it.

Yes, he had a rough start in life and yes, some of his outbursts were warranted. But throwing a tantrum during his best friends' wedding and ruining Alan's birthday party was way, way, way out of line. No excuses. From this perspective, he was definitely a drama queen.

reply

I never said his behavior at the wedding or Alan's birthday was right, but he was a messed up character and I liked it.

I agree that it was insulting for.him to harp on being all alone. Like geez Cory and Topanga are with him everyday for years. The Matthews consider him family. He had Feeny and then Jack and Angela. People who would do anything for him and be there for him no matter what. I wish I had that much support in my life, that much love. Sure it would be hard to come from a crappy real family that wasn't around, but he was very blessed to have what he did.

Yeah Shawn being "dark" was OK for a few episodes but I think the show overdid it. I think that it often lost sight of the comedy side of things, something which it was really good at. The teen angst drama stuff wasn't integrated smoothly enough in the later years. Maybe they could have done it but toned it down, or done it in a lighter way. I used to watch the show regularly, and still like to see it occasionally, but I skip the heavy episodes. They just seem too clumsy when they are trying to be serious. Maybe the first few years the mix of things worked better, but yeah it got too Degrassi at times later.

reply

And yet there's a contingency on the GMW boards that want this same schmatlzy, "real life" drama storylines on that show. I guess they don't realize this is the kinda crap that ruined BMW. These are probably the same people that think Degrassi tackles tough, real life issues instead of seeing it for the silly soap opera that it is. It's about as crazy as some of those Spanish soap operas.

reply

Yep!!!! I felt the same way. He was so emo and moody, just annoying. He's my least favorite character except when he's being silly with Corey, that's cute.

reply

I like when Corey and Shawn are having a great time, but the other half of the time when he is in his moods I just can't stand him.
