Question about the premise

So everyone goes by an alias in case they are caught by the police and therefore won’t know anything about anyone else. But they all know Joe was the one who planned the heist so wouldn’t they be able to rat out Joe regardless?

reply

The point of the scene where Vic Vega comes to visit Joe in his office is to illustrate that Joe knows how to hire guys he can trust; if they get caught, they will keep their mouth shut and do their time. And Joe will reward their loyalty.

reply

So then why would they have to give everyone alias’s?

reply

The characters aren't supposed to be machines but vicious human criminals. They aren't soldiers either so no one can fully trust them.

Cops cut deals with murderers all the time where they are immune from prosecution. So, if it's life in prison or freedom at the expense of other criminals what is likely to happen?

So, it's wise to take as many precautions as possible.

reply

Right but it seems pointless because all of them know Joe and could tell the cops that he was the one who put the whole thing together.

I know real criminals as I used to work for the prison system.

In Philadelphia, there was a drug kingpin everyone called M. Many of his employees were in jail and they didn't know who M really was. Supposedly he was a rich guy who lived in the suburbs.

I saw the movie when it came out so I don't recall every detail. But, is "Joe" really "Joe" or is that his codename?

Also, Joe appears to be a very connected criminal and could anyone survive telling on him?

Also, back to real life, M never commanded anyone to commit crimes, he had other people do that and so he made drug dealing happen, but I doubt he was easily connected to it.

In fiction, Sherlock Holmes had Professor Moriarty. He came up with long distance schemes to undermine society. Fu Manchu was another character like that. They planned crimes through long distance chains of events.

My point is that maybe Joe wasn't really Joe or that he was far removed from evidence, so he couldn't be easily charged with crimes.

Just to minimize the information the police can get from them regardless of what happens. If they don't know anything about each other, they can't even accidentally give the cops useful info. It's called compartmentalization.

They also spend the morning before the robbery in the town’s diner eating breakfast and joking loudly, while wearing matching suits and ties. Instead of wearing disguises, which is something the Mr Blue actor said was the most unbelievable part, since he was a convicted criminal himself. It’s basically just a comic book fantasy.

reply

Yeah seriously, I think the cops are going to run on the news 24/7 that a bunch of guys wearing black suits and ties robbed a jewelry store and killed a bunch of people and there were plenty of witnesses who saw them eating breakfast with Joe and Nice Guy Eddie.

Great movie BTW but this is a legitimate albeit minor nitpick.
