Why didn't this movie even didn't receive an oscar?
The Academy is a joke. This movie is a masterpiece and very close to the book, most movies don't do that alot anymore. And nowadays it's just art and camera work behind the set something that makes your eyes go to sleep. Very Underrated and under appriciated.
And Denzel should've won the oscar for this film, one of the most brilliant performance's i've ever seen.
Well, the Academy really snubbed this film in not even giving it a Best Picture nod. Al Pacino did a great job in Scent of a Woman playing a blind man you don't even like at the beginning and probably won because he had not won previously. Denzel already had won an Oscar a few years back, but still, yes, I would've voted for Denzel for Best Actor had I had a say. He goes through so much in this film that you can't believe it is the same guy, which is great acting.
This movie is playing now and I'm reminded of just what a masterpiece it was. I just find it unfathomable that Denzel didn't win the Oscar for this. I can't imagine anyone could have given a better performance. Someone else stated that Pacino received one of those "makeup" Oscars the year X was released. What a shame Denzel was robbed like that. Oh well...
"If it doesn't make sense, it's not true." -- Judge Judy
Pacino deserved like 3 Oscars in the 70's but it didn't happen. This happens all the time. Denzel just had the bad luck of going against a great actor in his early 50's at that time without a Oscar.
Pacino gave a great performance also. He played blind. He also had to learn to dance the tango blind. Moreover, he had to demonstrate an incredible range of emotions, ranging from suicidal depression to elation. He was also quite terrifying at times. This was the underrated part of his performance. Just think of it this way. Pacino is probably all of 5'6, and weighs about 120 lbs. He is not 6'4 and muscular. He is a little, thin guy. If you saw a 5'6 guy that weighed 120 lbs and was blind on the street, would you be afraid of him? I can not think of another actor Pacino's size and frame that could pull this off. Joe Pesce would be the only other short actor, but he is built like a fire hydrant or a fullback. The other thing that everyone ignores, is that 1992 was not just Pacino and Denzel, but also Robert Downey in Chaplin, which was another incredible performance. So it was just one of those years in which you had at least three great performances, Pacino, Denzel and Downey, that all could have won. 2005 was also very strong. Hoffman as Capote; Ledger in Brokeback; Pheonix as Johnny Cash; Straighairn in Good Night, Good Luck. In fact, Crowe was not even nominated for a great performance in Cinderella Man. Conversely, 2006 was very weak year, in which Forest Whitaker gave a strong performance and that was it.
