Seriously? The windchimes tipped Marlene off?

I found that part to be a little unrealistic when she saw the house listing of the doctor and saw the windchimes and immediately came to the conclusion Peyton was connected somehow, as if Peyton's the only person on the planet who has windchimes.

I thought that was stupid too. I can understand her not trusting her and having a bad feeling about her but there definitely needed to be something more to link Peyton to Claire's family than just windchimes.

After she noticed the windchime, didn't she look into the info on the house and see the doctor's name? Then went to check out the newspapers to see if she could find a picture of his wife? Maybe I'm remembering the sequence wrong.

reply

No you're right but the issue is a simple set of windchimes that many people have shouldn't have immediately made her suspicious and think Peyton was connected to the doctor that molested Claire, just because Peyton had given Claire windchimes.

Also Marlene acts as if shes never heard of windchimes before, like at Claire's house when she went "What is that annoying noise?" as if shes never heard the sound of windchimes before. Then later shes like "Well Peyton's the only person i've ever known to have these windchime things shs must be connected to the doctor somehow".

reply

No you're not. You are absolutely correct. I feel the same as Mr Babadook as far as the initial realization for her :)

reply

Marlene had a bad feeling about Payton from the beginning that she was hiding something and when she saw the windchimes looked exactly the same she just decided to investigate to see what she could find.

reply

Maybe because she realized it was the same wind chimes?

reply

Its still a stretch, as if only Peyton has those wind chimes.

reply

I think the point was that the chimes tipped her off and she did more research to be sure.

reply

Yes, that was ridiculous. And those pictures weren't even that clear.

In context, Marlene had just learned that Peyton is a fan of windchimes, Marlene could notice that Claire and her husband were stuck in what seemed to be exceptionally bad luck following Peyton's employment, and Marlene already disliked Peyton. And when she saw Mott's house had the same windchimes, she decided to confirm her suspicions by visiting said house and looking at old newspapers for photos of Mott's widow.

I think that if the scene where Peyton talks to Marlene about having put up windchimes didn't exist, and Marlene just immediately concluded from looking at a photo of Mott's house "omg these two houses have windchimes, PEYTON WAS MOTT'S WIFE!!!" then yeah it'd be ridiculous, but I feel the movie provides just enough context so that Marlene's discovery isn't much of a stretch.
