Why so different from the first one?

It’s basically a reboot instead of a sequel, nothing from the first film is referenced or continued, the entire tone is different, the first movie was one of the highest grossing movies of all time but this didn’t built on it in anyway.

It’s not a bad film but it’s not really a Batman film, it’s a Tim Burton story with Batman added in here and there.

Should have binned him off and got Alex Proyas (The Crow and Dark City) to make a proper sequel to the original.

The ending would've been much more powerful if you removed all of the scenes of Batman killing to help tie it to the original. I'm fine with him killing in '89 because he was tormented, just starting out, and Joker in Tim Burton's world had killed his parents.

But it would've been good to see him in this (not least to flesh him out a bit more and connect the two films better) to have him conflicted about that and trying to avoid killing and then trying to stop Catwoman from killing Shrek at the end would've been a good emotional journey for him and more impactful.

Instead you have him still not only killing but doing so with a smile at one point, and then saying to her at the end "Don't do this" like an hypocrite.
