Where do they carry the swords??

Even when they have a small jacket they somehow manage to carry the sword around in it. I've just finished watching "Under the colour of authority" and Richie is wearing a short black jacket, then he magically gets his sword and starts fighting Mako... It's just weird.

It's never explained. There are a lot of theories floating around on this board though.

This question has to be a joke by now...

GK: Every show is your last show. That's my philosophy.
Rhonda: Thank you, Plato.

reply

Well, since I've only started watching the series a few years ago (I was 3 years old in 1992), no it wasn't a joke. It has always bugged me so I wanted to know if there was ever an explanation or if there were any theories.

Some believe the method of sword carry is a part of their mystic power. This is fanfic of course, but there are those who explain it away by theorizing that there is literally a pocket dimension where the swords are hidden until they are needed and summoned by instinct. A good example of where this theory came from is when Richie is confronted by Annie Devlin. In the scene, she is wearing tight jeans and a tight shirt with a fitted, cropped jean jacket. Suddenly out of nowhere, she whips out this rapier from behind her back. It's almost like she called it forth from some other place.

This is actually the coolest theory I have heard so far, so I am inclined to believe it also. I also think they should include this theory in the new reboot of the franchise.

reply

Yeah, that's a pretty cool theory! :-) thanks for answering!

This reminds me of a fan fiction story I read one time. In it, Dawson asked Duncan, (To some degree) “Hey, how do you guys carry those swords around in your jackets like that?” To which, Duncan answered, “Trade secret.” I’ve always seen it as something that the writers and/or film makers couldn’t hammer out. So, they left it to be a little tongue and cheek and ambiguous.

The same thing happened with Cassandra in "comes a horsemen" she showed up with no sword than suddenly just pulls her sword out of nowhere and considering what she was wearing it would be impossible to hide.

My guardian diety is a planet with the sea of sand, the soldier of embrace, Sailor Neptune!

reply

I can't wait for the Rachel MacLeod or the Cassandra episodes. I think they were by far my favorites. Too bad these two weren't featured more in the show.

reply

Same here I thought Cassandra was cool once I got used to her (had issues with her in prophecy mainly because I hate it when female immortals do barely anything in the episodes.)

What about "The Lady and The Tiger", Amanda's first ep. Just after she and Zachary Blaine steal that book, they make their way into a restaurant to hide and Amanda is wearing all tight black leather and she pulls her sword out from behind her back like it was tucked in her jacket against her spine.

As far as the dimensional pocket is concerned, I tend to not believe that theory, it's too much like "The Source" with the Guardian pulling his sword out of his chest when ever he needs it...I think the swords are just meant to be hidden within an Immortal's jacket/coat or whatever and the writers know that is not too realistic at times but they expect the fans to kinda look the other way and not care too much. Just like the little problem of all the headless dead bodies left everywhere after a battle that never really seem to cause too many problems for an Immortal - fans just look the other way.

Not too mention the crazy lightening storms localized entirely under some bridge or in another abandoned warehouse that never get witnessed...

I have inside me blood of kings - YEAH!

i noticed that but also noticed the first few eps that duncan carried his in his bag .one ep it showed him pulling it from his coat sleeve. the mountain men one where they grab tess he had it in a bag and then when he killed caleb before they left he told tess to wait and he went and picked his sword out of the water.the ep where he was at a party and in a tux after he was done fighting he hid his sword in a pot. they showed some eps where in flash backs he didnt even have "his sword" he had whatever sword came with the outfit.but i did notice the eps where they had no place to pull one from a jacket and yet they was just there and i figuered it was some kinda power they had.i mean why not they're super powered types why couldnt they

The only problem with this theory is sometimes Immortals are caught unarmed and need someone to bring them a sword. (Duncan in They also Serve, Richie in The Messenger). If they could summon their swords at will, these events wouldn't have been able to happen.

oh what a load of *beep* I suppose they mystically alter their faces to look like stuntmen at certain times, too.

How about the same place Ultraviolet carried all her weapons?

[No I'm not serious - just because I'm workin' my mouth don't mean I'm workin' my brain!]

I can only imagine what the police would say about that when they manage to confiscate an Immortal's weapon!
Gasp! Mr. French's fingerprints are all over the sword, as are traces of that headless man's blood and...oh dear lord what is this, I don't even--

I like to tape my fingers together to see what it would be like to be a dinosaur.

I was wondering why so many of them had their heads up their hineys! Thanks for clearing that up.

The Kurgan had the best idea in the 1st movie. His sword could be disassembled and carried in a nice case...X

reply

Up there ass, of course. ;-p

It would be cool if they hide their swords in some dimensional pocket but it only seems to work when pulling out the sword and not putting it away.

In the 1st movie, Connor had to hide the sword after his fight in MSG.

It's just another suspense of belief.

You guys are absolutely nerd geeks about highlander! LOL. I so love this series, but come on, there is no other dimension or whatever, it's called, "poor directing." Obviously, when Ritchie had to fight Duncan's scottish girly and she whips a sword out of nowhere, its a spur of the moment thing in the director's mind. Hey, we got a good looking girl, wearing tight clothes, all the guys will be looking at her breasts, and WAM! Here comes the sword and we all forget. Most immortals wear trenchcoats to conceal their swords, but it's just creative directing in the end. I mean, look at the way it was directed in the first season compared to the way that they directed it halfway through the second one. The quickening scenes were more elaborate and for show because they had to keep the audience in "aw" of the special effects in 1993-94 and keep ratings up. There were plenty of shows that didn't even involved a quickening and that was due to a change in directors and to mix things up to keep the new viewers interested. It was a great series, but seriously, you guys are putting way to much thought into this! haha..

Actually, they are lightsabers with the metal blades as visual disguises when activated. How else could Duncan sometimes cut other immortals' heads off with a light delicate stroke?

There's a fanfiction series on the net where Aidan, a 2600 year old student of Methos wears a leather harness under her clothes with a sheath down the center of her back holding her blade. Methos has the same. The author makes it a point to mention that this is why Methos wears Henleys most of the time (don't know how canon this is); his Ivanhoe is easy to hide and easy to reach under the loose, long sleeved shirt.

In response to previous post here:
As to the Kurgan's multi-piece sword, wouldn't that weaken the blade considerably?

And finally, I've seen the blooper reels from the series and there if at least one scene where a crew member is crouching down just out of camera range to hand the actor his sword as he is 'pulling it out of nowhere'.
