Is Bill Murray a God?
I know this may seem like a weird question, but watching this movie, I realize his character is almost always 'cluelessly omnipotent' or 'bumblingly invulnerable'.
Here we have this man, who supposedly can barely get everyday chores done, he's so neurotic, nervous, anxious - you name it. Then suddenly, he's able to do all kinds of things, all the while subtly manipulating his enemy, driving him mad while not being worried about all the murder attempts or the possibility of ending up in a mental institution.
It's like he has no care in the world, because he KNOWS nothing can hurt, harm or commit him to an institution. Bombs are literally strapped to his body, and he doesn't lose his cool, but is happy about it.
He always 'happens' to do the EXACT right thing needed, from how to make the ego-shrink's family happy, how to succeed where the doc failed, and so on. He manages to drive the shrink literally insane (catatonic?), and THEN he's able to bring him back and heal him.
Now, let's think about the movie 'The Man Who Knew Too Little' - same thing, character-wise. He's able to just calmly, happily and cluelessly 'stumble' upon all the exact right actions, he never considers anything can hurt or imprison him, because nothing can.
In 'Groundhog Day', he literally even THINKS he is a God, and says it out loud! (Character-wise, he's, AGAIN, invulnerable, able to do ANYTHING without any worry or fear of getting injured, hurt, etc. etc. - see the pattern here?)
In 'Ghostbusters', his Godhood is also hinted by the whole Dan Aykroyd admitting he is NOT a God (hinting that Murray IS, and told that he should've thought of himself as a God when asked).
If I was some kind of 'near-omnipotent entity' that can be called 'A God', this is exactly what I would do - I would appear a bumbling fool on the planet, knowing full well that every situation is 100% under my control, but I would make it LOOK like it's all just 'happenstance'. It would be great fun to play, and no one could suspect a thing (because I could control that, too).
Considering all this... wouldn't it explain a heckuva lot? Could it be that he actually is this kind of 'Godlike entity', and just wants to have fun with us vulnerable people, by flexing his 'Godhood', but doing it in the most subtle way - not only being a bumbling fool without any credibility for elevated state of being, but also playing ROLES in movies as such a bumbling fool, who, regardless of everything else, somehow 'accidentally' wins EVERY single situation and emerges a 'Godlike hero' in the end?
I mean, it's a really stupid theory, I know, but when you look at all the evidence, and all his characters in all these movies, you have to start wondering.. how the heck can Bob be so 'bumblingly omnipotent'? How can 'The Man Who Knew Too Little' ALWAYS do the exact right thing for each situation and never -actually- fumble anything to his detriment? He can even suddenly dance a very complex coreography without missing a beat - literally!
'Are YOU a God?', they ask in Ghostbusters, as if Gozer knows there IS a God among them, but that particular entity just isn't it, because the REAL one is Bill Murray? A subtle hint that a real 'Godlike entity' would definitly leave for the audience to be clueless about... I know I would.
