Shouldn't Terminators know about crying?

They ruled over the human race for awhile. I'm in the middle of watching all the the films(not T4)

reply

Maybe they never stopped to ask. He was teachable and capable of developing feelings or at least faking feelings (spoiler: as can be seen in genisys when he says "my Sarah"). Maybe no other terminator "got close" enough to "care" to ask. Pardon the gratuitous air quotes.

reply

I really don't think it's right to consider Genisys canon in regards to this movie.

Shouldn't directors/writers know about hackneyed plot contrivances?

Cameron sure does.

lol They know everything about humans, but crying is unheard of.😦

Clark's destiny = Superman, LL &LL.

Ouch! :)

What bugged me is that the terminator asked John: "Pain causes it?" and John replied in a snap "No, it's different." John is totally WRONG. Pain DOES cause crying, whether it is physical pain or emotional pain, it is pain nevertheless!

He should have. He had detailed files on human anatomy.

Well to be fair it is a killing machine so it probably only had files on where the weakest parts of the human body were. Which is why after hearing the Terminator say that Sarah said, "Probably makes you a more efficient killer, right?" And since Terminators aren't programmed to feel things it's not like they enjoy killing people. Crying has nothing to do with the most effective way to kill humans.

Green Goblin is great! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1L4ZuaVvaw

Are you sure it has nothing to do with killing humans?

In fact, emotions have a lot to do with human survival. Mind controls the body. A person can virtually get frozen by fear, which is an emotion, someone who feels devastated and lonely is a much easier target in comparison with someone who keeps the faith and fights back. People reactions are the result of emotions, and body reacts in different ways when you are angry, sad, happy, scared, hopeful, etc. The level of love a mom has for her child is also good information. I am sure a mother would react different if a killer wants to hurt her child or someone else's child. I definitely believe that a Terminator who knew about emotions would be a better killer than one that doesn't.

For the ones who take Terminator 3 canon this is somehow revisited in that movie when they are in the cemetery and the terminator makes John angry to get him on again. The terminator also talks about fear when they are in the motorhome. As much as I hate T3 I must admit those bits were nice.

The next Terminator will be a garrulous machine that kills using psychology, kinda like Hannibal Lecter with his cellmate. He'll know all of the emotional sore spots.

They don't call me Col. Homer cause I'm some dumbass army guy!

reply

I know right? John was such a dumbass! A ten year old kid should know how to proprly explain the human condition! GAWD!

reply

They most likely either didn't care or knew but had no way of finding out. It would be like a lifetime blind person trying to understand color.

No, it says 'i know now WHY you cry'. He knew humans cry, just not the reason for it.

"He's dusted, busted and disgusted, but he's ok"

reply

Exactly this. It's only when he goes to sacrifice himself and leave John/Sarah behind that he understands why (well, one of the reasons) humans cry. Damn, that moment is what puts the film into legendary status. The Terminator's arc is complete.

reply

He knows that physically John is fine, so he can't come to any logical conclusion about why he's so distressed. When you have no emotions, psychological pain is a difficult concept to grasp.

In a scene when he was administering first aid to an injured Sarah Connor he tells her that he has detailed files on human anatomy to put her at ease so she knows he can administer first aid.

I am wondering if something like that would be covered by the "detailed files on human anatomy".

T2 = a cool, but stupid movie.

The I know now why you cry - line is an example.

I'm just on my way up to Clavius.

Why can't you wretched prey creatures understand that the Universe doesn't owe you anything!?

If you are in the military, you better not be showing any crying. That was what the machines had to deal with in the future. I do not imagine any of Connor's troops cried.

THERE IS NOTHING TO FEAR. COLLEGE FOOTBALL IS HERE!!!

Wasn't just a military though, they were the resistance and working to that end out of necessity (for survival) not because they were in the army for some government.

Additionally Reece states in the first movie that they learn how to remove pain and block it out. There is not really much to cry about anyway.
