Shouldn't Terminators know about crying?

They ruled over the human race for awhile. I'm in the middle of watching all the the films(not T4)

I think people are taking some of the lines too literally. Here's some dialogue from the Director's Cut to explain the matter.

John Connor: Can you learn stuff you haven't been programmed with so you could be... you know, more human? And not such a dork all the time?

Terminator: My CPU is a neural-net processor; a learning computer. But Skynet presets the switch to read-only when we're sent out alone.

Sarah Connor: Doesn't want you doing too much thinking, huh?

Terminator: No.

In the scene where the Terminator asks John "why do you cry?", that is the first time ever any Terminator has had his learning switch on and have the opportunity to have a conversation with a human about their feelings. In other words, Terminators by and large are aware that humans cry, they just do not comprehend the psychology behind it.

In the final scene when the Terminator says "I know now why you cry, but it's something that I can never do" I think he means that his experiences with John and Sarah have given him a rudimentary understanding of sorrow, but being able to actually experience the emotion is beyond his learning capabilities.

I still think T2 has one of the greatest endings in cinema. Not only does he sacrifice himself in order to complete his mission, but in doing so he comes to understand human sorrow. The final "Ok" with his thumb just seals it and shows how much he learned and cared for John.
