Major plot hole!

I like Psycho IV: The Beginning, but there's something about it that really bugs me. In the original Psycho, when Norman has the conversation with Marion, he tells her that his mother's lover talked her into building the motel. In the flashback scenes with Henry Thomas as the young Norman Bates, the motel is up and running before she's even met the man! How could the writers make such a bad mistake?

I hate plot holes. This whole franchise is ruined

Remember in the original movie Norman is very mentally ill. He likely wasn't able to accurately remember details of the past, especially with having to repeatedly lie about killing Marion and if he killed the other girls mentioned in the original film, he might have also had to lie to cover up their murders. Repeatedly lying can cause a person to not remember other things.
