So... he was ordering others to attack....but refrained himself from engaging the enemy. Sending others to a battle others were willing fight and die while he remained safe. In essence, his "Valiant" reputation...was all an act...a lie. It was a reputation given perhaps..but never earned. And in the end, he had to comes to terms with that failure.
Just my take on a possibility :)
