This or Menace II Society?

Personally I think Menace is twice the movie this is

reply

Try Fresh (1994). Better than both together.

reply

I never saw fresh but menace is one of my all time favorites.
Boyz was not believable. Menace is also fun. I love saying the lines.

reply

I like this a while lot better.I think menace sort of copyed this movie in a way.

reply

If anything, Menace copied Goodfellas and Mean Streets by Martin Scorsese. The Hughes Brothers are big Scorsese fans and talk about his influence on them. Menace just gets compared to Boyz because they are black hood movies that were released a couple of years apart, but Menace is miles more similar to Mean Streets/Goodfellas when it comes to the way the movies are made. The structure, narration, camera shots/angles, etc...

I've actually never seen any movie that I think is so clearly influenced by Scorsese as Menace is.

I think they are two different movies. Menace is more about the gang mentality and Boyz is a urban coming of age drama set in LA. I think they both are perfect for the times they were portraying but for different reasons.

Fresh is an amazing film but it's more fantasy than anything.

The best urban coming of age film is Coolie High, by far!

reply

Yea i agree on that one L NINE.
Some 1 say over here (foolishly) that "BITH was not even believable."

That prove he is not from the L.A. mean streets/the hood anywhere east or west coast SMDH.-

But yea L NINE
Nothing is even remotely-close-better in some ways i gotta say.(I watch it still alot)

HOWEVER imho BITH is the best.

Menace. Definitely.

reply

yeah i actually saw Menace first and then this but i think this one is more original and very hard hitting great screenplay and incredible direction for a guy who was only 23 at the time

reply

Boyz = Godfather

Menace = Goodfellas

reply

perfect analogy

reply

That's fair comparison I think. I have all 4 :)

reply

So do I. Four wonderful, movies.

reply

They're two totally different movies. One is about a teenager in the hood, who has practically no gang affiliation, being raised by his business owner/community activist father, the other is about a teenager in the hood adopted by his helpless grandparents, who is very much gang affiliated. Different stories.

reply

They're two totally different movies.

but it's pretty easy to see why people compare the two. given the general subject matter and they are similar time frame to. plus, there is very few movies like these that are actually memorable like these two are as they are the stand out's in their genre.

I think out of all the movies this one is the most powerful for a couple reasons. A truly innocent character who seems to have the best chance of making it out of a troubled situation is killed over petty stuff. Doughboy's last scene with Trey is amazing. I love Menace and I think its the most entertaining of Hood movies but i don't find the message is powerful as Cain did alot of bad to deserve his fate and his muslim friend getting killed showed innocent dying but his character wasn't as well developed as well as Ricky. Its almost an action film, while Boyz in the Hood is much more dramatic. I don't think Menace really ripped off Boyz in the Hood, its quite evident from interviews that the movie that inspired them the most in Goodfellas by the use of the voice over by Cain.
