I think George Lucas tried to do the same thing with "Wizard" in The Phantom Menace. "You're going to compete in the pod race? That is soooo wizard Anni."

STATION!

It did catch on with at least one kid at my school, who used to say it all the bloody time.

Yes, but Lucas didn't invent the use of "wizard" as slang. You'll find it in Agatha Christie.

Here is some actual dialogue from "And Then There Were None":

MARSTON: That dirty old double-crosser! He's let me down. Well, it's a pretty wizard island. Rather a wizard girl, that secretary. She ought to liven things up a bit. I say, old man, what about dressing for dinner if there's time?
LOMBARD: Let's go and explore.
MARSTON: How wizard!
LOMBARD: Things are a bit at sixes and sevens with the Owens not turning up.
MARSTON: Tricky, what? I say, wizard place for a holiday, what?

Actually its used a lot in Enid Blyton books too. I always took it to mean the British slang for awesome.

Very good. But brick not hit back!

I just don't understand why they named the martians Station in the first place.

reply

Because nobody could figure out what the hell it meant.

Didn't Sony use it in an advertising blitz of their console gaming system?

Because it's one of the stupidest things ever said in a movie. Only an idiot would think it's cool to say it.

Every now and then I try to get it going but then I forget. But now I have a podcast and next week we're talking about Bogus Journey, so I'm going to try again. :P

Station.

We gave it a shot but sadly it didn't take. Maybe when we have more listeners we'll try again.

The usage of "station" sounds so stupid and like a desperate attempt to coin a catchphrase.

reply

wrong, the coining of the term was streets ahead back in 1991
