I was lucky enough to obtain a VHS copy of Leatherface Texas Chainsaw Massacre III Director's Rough Print back in '97 from an underground mail-in catalog called "Cut-Throat Video". One could argue that the quality is pure rubbish, since its time-coded, choppy with no post-production musical score or effects. My personal opinion is that its the only "true" way to watch this crazy film. It is the "definitive" uncut Jeff Burr vision with all the dialog, violence and set pieces in tact. The fact that it is so raw and has no music or cuts to it, attributes a rare feeling like you're watching a snuff film or some kind of twisted home movie. There are many scenes and dialog that are not even in the Unrated Warner Archive Collection bluray release. I have since tried to upload it Youtube, but was flagged for copyright by New Line and my account was frozen. I made a DVD from the VHS using excellent conversion software to preserve it the best I could. I have no idea how someone would go about getting a copy. I looked everywhere on the net. I consider it a true "gem" in my collection of rare horror.
It includes the best alternative ending instead of that nonsense when Ken Foree's character returns, It does not end well for Kate Hodge character neither. Basically everyone in the film is killed. The chainsaw murder scenes and gore are twice as long. Viggo Mortesen's character is impaled on a makeshift booby trap and gurgles and spews blood, and Joe Unger has more funny lines. Its a travesty what New Line did to this film. I think if was left alone, It would have been a successful addition to the franchise.
