Putin
Is it sheer coincidence that the political officer killed by Ramius is named Putin?
shareYes, this movie was made before Putin came to power(1990 vs. 2000).
shareIt's not when the movie came out that's relevant; it's when the book was written, i.e., somewhat before 1983. The question is whether the author, Tom Clancy, had any reason to know of Putin as a KGB agent and named his fictional KGB man after the real Putin. I doubt it, but that's the question.
shareYou ever stop to think that Putin may be a rather common name for Russians?

My understanding is that it is not a common Russian name. But I am not familiar with Russian names, so perhaps someone who is can weigh in.

I am not being a captain obvious when I am having to spell it out for the idiot asking.
A captain obvious is someone interjecting themselves into a conversation to announce information no one else is questioning and is already aware of.
Since the person created this thread and asked questions and still did not get it when explained by multiple people. someone had to "spell it out" for them.
Of course it's obvious to the rest of us, but my statements was not directed at the rest of us but to the one who doesn't get it.
So fark off.

WOW.. you must be some serious stalker dude.
It's been a long time ago that in a thread discussing the ASVAB, when someone had a question about the ASVAB and the scoring I mentioned that my score was an 88.
I am not continuously bragging about it.
But for you to remember that and try using it against me years later (Yes... it's been that long ago....)
Seriously... *beep* off.
Also... your wording echoes exactly the same arguments and insults that another troll I have on ignore always used... so goodbye sockpuppet.

It's actually a pretty rare last name for a Russian. Being one myself for the last 31 years, i've never met a person with such a last name before the Putin came to power in '99.
So yeah, it does look like a creepy coincidence, for i wish i'd never heard that name at all.
I was also going to answer that the novel was written long before Putin came to power. I did a quick read on Wiki to see when he was elected as President. It was very late and I didn't want to investigate it further. Yes, Putin was in the KGB during the time the novel was written, but I doubt Clancy had clearance or investigative resources to know about the REAL Putin. Also, if there was any inkling that the KGB thought Clancy knew about the real Putin, and was writing about him specifically, they may have killed him. It certainly wasn't a Salmon Rushdie scenario, but ya never know. I think it's totally coincidental, and like CGSailor said, it may have been a common enough name for Clancy just to pull it out of a Russian phone book. Fact can be stranger than fiction.

When i watch this movie I like to pretend their relatives in some way.

I highly doubt Tom Clancy would have that kind sources after all he is a civilian even back then he was just starting to get notice for his books.
I think it's totally coincidental...Probably just used the Big Book of Russian Surnames and whoa...there it was. share
Putin must have seemed like a breath of fresh air after the Gogols and Pushkins of the Bond movies... well, little did they know...

Yes, that was really Putin, and not just the character, that was really Putin acting the role, he later became ruler of the Russian empire, and the KGB.
