i wonder what the director's cut would be like. to my understanding director was pleased in the end with the inclusion of jason miller, so the major diffrence would be the lack of exorcism sub-plot? to be honest, film flows perfectly until exorcist shows up to save the day (and gets killed 2 minutes later), but i assume there would be further alterations to the ending (this short cementary scene before cutting to credits was very poor conclusion imo)?

From what I've heard, the original cut of the film only had Dourif (as Karras possessed, with no separate actor for the Gemini Killer). Miller was added in the studio cut, and the scenes with Dourif were kept by adding the "eyes of faith" concept. Even though the "eyes of faith" was basically an accidental creation used to accommodate both actors' performances, it worked out very well and I can't imagine the movie being as interesting without it. The tacked-on exorcism did not work so well, obviously.

So I'm guessing the director's cut would be a weaker film overall because of having only a single actor as Karras/Gemini, but improved by the absence of an exorcism scene (and hopefully without the even more ridiculous lighting/dead rising from floor scene) in the finale.

Awesome.

I was impressed by the Nightbreed Director's Cut and now Exorcist III coming, hope Scream Factory gets a blu-ray CE.

Any new updates on the Exorcist III Directors cut blu ray?

reply

You can't update something that isn't even official.

Yeah I know but I am just hoping and keeping my fingers crossed that Morgan Creek did indeed find those missing scenes and doesnt let us fans down! By the way speaking of, Erik, when will you be releasing your Exorcist III book? Is it still in the cards and happening?

reply

I'm sure Blatty said Morgan Creek lost or destroyed all of the cut out bits of film. So no directors cut I'm afraid

reply

I really hope a Director's Cut comes to fruition. From what I can gather from the scant news that has come out recently, the footage previoiusly thought to have been lost/destroyed has been found but the issue of whether or not it's salaveagle is the big question.

Not sure where it was found and in what condition it was kept but if it wasn't preserved properly, it might be useless. I would hope that with today's technology, it could be restored and fully upgraded to a HD transfer but other factors come into play, noteably, if the footage is determined to be of substancial condition from the start, then Morgan Creek won't waste the time or money to even attempt to clean it up.
Fingers crossed that it's at least in a half-way decent condition to warrant a clean-up. As far as content goes, here's my wishlist - -

1.) Deleted scenes (at least three that I know of)
• Alternate cut of priest's death at the beginning with his corpse holding his head
• A flashback to 1973 where Kinderman is at the morgue when Karras' body is on the examination table
• Extended cut of final scene (where Karras is re-buried for good

2.) All references to Father Morning omitted/deleted

3.) Keep the alternating shots of both Jason Miller and Brad Doriff as Patient X

Unfortunately, that would be difficult to do if you also incorporated the scene where Kinderman inspects Karras' body at the morgue, because we'd see Dourif, not Miller (Dourif played the possessed Karras, there was no "eyes of faith" cut to a different actor portraying the Gemini's soul).

In fact, the existing version of the film has still has one out of place scene from the earlier cut of Dourif as Karras: in Kinderman's dream, he sees Dourif in a glass case wearing a priest's frock, which makes no sense with the current Dourif-as-Gemini cut of the film.

yeah I guess all we can hope for, for now is that those cut scenes are still salvagable. I really hope they are! If they can fix them and put it together perhaps in the movie as a directors cut, or as just deleted scenes in a supplementry section, and then oficially released, I personally will go out and celebrate on the day it hopefully gets released!! I guess we just need to keep all of our fingers crossed!

I've always wondered just what the hell was that priest doing in the dream sequence - I think I may even have asked this on this forum a couple of years back - and just now, after reading your post, I realize it's Brad Dourif impersonating Father Karras. Thank you very much for your insightfulness.

reply

No but that was a while back about what Blatty had said I believe. Apparently this is recent news floating around. so I am still hopeful and keeping my fingers crossed!

reply

Well FINGERS CROSSED. I hope there is.

reply

How I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE for this to be true, but I'll believe it when I see it.

reply

What I don't understand is they said the original director's cut was "Lost". That is not true. They still have all the footage that was shot. It just needed to be reassembled!

reply

here it is June and nothing about this film has been said by Morgan Creek! I have my doubts!

How sweet of you.

Of course, I never said that a Director's Cut wasn't coming...I simply said it might not be the Director's Cut you're expecting.

kermonde tweeted last year that blatty was asked to sepervise the recut of the film.

with blatty on board it's weird that they want to recreate the orginal cut rather than allow blatty to make his final cut using all the available footage like they did with clive barker. judging from the interviews i'm under impression that blatty would still like to keep some of jason miller's footage in his ideal cut. but maybe quality of the recovered footage is the issue here.
