Why not let the terrorists take off...
...and then send a couple of fighter planes to blow the 747 out of the sky? Even though I enjoy this movie, the terrorists were too dumb to take hostages with them!

shareUsing Movie Logic:
Because the airport still did not have any radar so they would not have known where the plane was heading. And if not for McClane, they wouldn't have even known when the plane took off.
Good point, I guess if they were stealthy enough about their take-off, it would have made it difficult to locate them in the air in time to scramble fighter planes.
shareThere are other radar services than the airport. This was 1990, the entire coastline was covered by cold war radar systems. It still is today, but the manning of said systems are probably a lot more lax now as everyone expects the planes to just have their transponders on.

But that would not work, cause in the DH universe, John McClane has to defeat the terrorists, and say
"Yippee-Ki-Yay,motherfucker" at the end.
😎
Where would they get hostages? Thanks to Major Grant there were none available.
shareWatch the scene again. When Grants truck pulls into the hanger, you can see very clearly in the background, many airport workers. Some were even driving those golf cart like things arounds. So there was plenty of hostages to take
shareThey were heading off to Val Verde to start the good life, not simply change the field of conflict to another location.
Taking hostages with them would therefore make no sense.
