Is there actually anything "wrong with that"?

I am fabricating very strong rumours from people close to the show that Jerry Seinfeld will imminently be putting out a statement apologizing for Seinfeld's use of "not that there's anything wrong with that" as a passive aggressive means of attacking minority groups (namely homosexuals).

Should Jerry and Larry David apologize? Was it wrong to use that expression as comedic liability pass for attacking people based upon their sexual preferences?

Was there anything wrong with that?

reply

Not at all. The LGBTQ community should apologize to the world for being such jackasses.

i never thought them saying that would be considered bad it always seemed like they were saying there's nothing wrong with being a gay.

in the chineese woman episode he says something like it's ok if he stereotypes asian woman because he likes their race, which i thought sounds bad, not sure if their was a consequence to that remark, but i'm pretty sure he meant it.

reply

THE IMPLICATION BEING...THEY SAY "NOT THAT THERES ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT" BECAUSE THEIR/OUR FIRST IMPULSE/THOUGHT WAS MAYBE THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH IT.

I DO NOT AGREE...BUT I SEE THE NARROW POINT OF VIEW THIS SUPPORTS.

reply

Actually, in the episode, they said it to defend themselves after denying they were gay. It was always, "I'm not gay, not that there's anything wrong with that." It was their way to assure everyone they were not homophobic.

reply

SAME THING REALLY...EITHER WAY ITS A SILLY POINT OF CONTENTION AT THIS POINT...TO APPOLOGIZE FOR SOMETHING THAT WAS NOT NEGATIVE AND COMMONPLACE SPEECH AT THE TIME...THE FUTURE IS FUCKED UP.

reply

If he were to apologize for this i would lose respect for the man who has thus far spoken out against woke cancel culture.Easily offended woke infants need to learn the difference between humor and offense.

reply

But the characters were explicitly saying there was nothing wrong with it.

reply

SAYING "THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH IT" IMPLIES THERE IS UNCERTAINTY THAT REQUIRES VERBAL CLARIFICATION.

reply

Right, and they were afraid people would interpret their denial as uncertainty.

reply

People seem to have lost the ability to consider time and context when deciding if they should be upset by something.

For example "Not that there's anything wrong with that." was fine in the mid 90's. Someone could say that without being homophobic. And gay people weren't offended when they heard it. Today is different. You wouldn't say that without upsetting a lot of people.

I would be offended and lose a lot of respect for Jerry and Larry if they apologize for that episode. If they said they wouldn't do an episode like that today, that would be fine. But saying you regret doing it then would be ridiculous.
