Adam Schiff or Arthur Branch?

Which DA was better and why?

Steven Hill as Adam Schiff (Seasons 1-10)

Fred Dalton Thompson as Arthur Branch (Season 12-17)

I never liked Branch but I think Adam was fairer and you could tell he was the boss, reminded me a bit of Brando at times, very good acting.

Seems a lot older than Branch, also i hate how political Branch wad compared to Schiff

I think Adam Schiff is my second favourite Law And Order character after Ben Stone.

It's a difficult choice. I liked both, but I think the political and even some ethical differences between Branch and McCoy made the show a little more interesting to watch.

Branch just seemed to want "someone" to be convicted! I'm still ticked off at him from that episode where he fired Serena because she found the right killer of some woman over 3 guys accused of the crime! That made no sense to me at all! ;-/

You're a fool "Xelout" and need psychological care due to being too serious about a post on the facts of a TV show! The episode ended with her just leaving and you're conflating that with another episode talking about buying her a steak! That episode was totally different, but I'm not even going to bother looking it up for you! Do your own homework loser! ;-/

Could not agree more! I never saw that coming, because they have had their differences of opinion, but not to the point where he ever thought of firing her. Now out of the blue, he terminated her. That was a major flaw (or inconsistency) in the story line.

And they just threw in the lesbian thing at the last second, to be controversial. Never in her entire tenure on the show was there any hint that she wasn't straight.

Definitely Schiff.

I think the best written episodes were during the Schiff era, which gives him the edge

reply

Yes and the scenes with both Michael Moriarty and Steven Hill are the best, 2 great actors

reply

Preferred Schiff. The episodes with him were much better IMO. By the time that Branch came on, the show lost a bit of its luster.

Hill was 68 when the show began he had fewer lines after Moriarity left. They were great together.

In the book, Law & Order: The Unofficial Companion," by Kevin Courrier and Susan Greene, there is a quote by writer Rene Balcer about writing for Steven Hill.

"I love writing for Steven Hill more than anyone else. He is one of the few actors who will call and tell the writers to give him fewer lines. And then when you give him the lines, he'll say give him fewer words. Then you give him fewer words and he'll say give him fewer syllables."

I wonder what it was like to write and for Hill to deliver that long, twisted line near the end of Season 4's "The Golden Years" when he reacts to Stone planning to offer the granddaughter a plea deal based on incomplete knowledge of her intentions.

reply

Definitely Adam Schiff. The scene where he watches his wife die brings me to tears every time I watch it. Without a word, Steven Hill showed total heartbreak. Amazing acting.
