K-Mart

How'd this movie get away with making fun of K-Mart? I thought moviemakers are required to get permission from any and all brands before using them. There's no way K-Mart would've read the script for this and said "Okay, sure!" and K-mart is not thanked anywhere in the end credits. So wassup?

I think 'attention Kmart shoppers' had become generic by 1989. The blue light specials had existed since the 60s, so trademarks if any on the phrase might have ended by the time this film was made. Same way people say 'xerox' if the copier/printer used is a different brand.
