Did Lewis really deserve the oscar over Cruise

I havent seen Lewis performace in this movie. But did he really deserve the ocsar over Cruise. Cause performances in Born on the forth of July was so pwerful. Never have I been moved so much by a perfomance by a actor such as Tom Cruise in that flim.

reply

of course he deserved the oscar his portrayal of christie brown was the best performance ever

in My Left Foot than Tom Cruise was in Born On the Fourth of July. DDL was incredible as Christy Brown.

May this find you happy and healthy.

I haven't seen this movie yet but Lewis' performance better be good because Tom Cruise was simply brilliant in Born on the 4th.

DDL performance in this film is considered one of the best performances EVER! so i hope that clears things up.

tom cruise was excellent in bofoj he would have been my next pic to win

cruise is only a movie star

day lewis is actually an actor
a master of the craft

Cruise was great in BOTFOJ, his best next to Magnolia, but DDL was absoutley outstanding. My mother actually thought they had actually put a person with cerebral palsey as Christy Brown. My father and I had to constantly remind her that this was just acting. It was even harder trying to convince her that the same man who was Christy Brown was also Bill the Butcher!

reply

DDL's is definately better than Tom Cruise's performance. See the movie, you wont be disappointed!

reply

I prefer DDL's performance in My Left Foot, just my opinion.
But Tom Cruise's performance and the movie BOTFOJ are very good too.
In My Left Foot I particularly like the mother character and the entire family.

reply

I've seen both movies... I think if both movies had been made in different years then Cruise and DDL would have won. I think their performances in these movies are by far their best

Lewis deserved the Oscar over most performances in film history.

I agree. I watched an old video yesterday where Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel were discussing their preferences for the Oscars that year and both of them picked Tom Cruise for Best Actor.

im not gonna deny it cruise was phenomenal in born of the fourth of july, there was one scene where he breaks down when going to visit a soldier's family and breaks down, brilliantly acted, but i still think day-lewis was a bit better not by much though, its a shame people seem to hate cruise but when he puts the effort in he can deliver a great performance, very underrated performance

You must be in-bred, Sonic-Manipulation, because I can't think of anything else that could explain such stupidity.

Why are people here saying that DDL's performance is considered "one of the best ever?" By whom? This might be your opinion and that is fine but let's not go crazy here. He did a good job in portraying a person with cerebral palsy but this film and the acting are way overrated. The film was mediocre at best and aside from mastering the mannerisms of a cerebral palsy victim - DDL's character didn't do very much. Some might argue that Tom Cruise's character was way more versatile.
So should tom cruise have won over DDL? Who knows, it's basically a toss-up, they both performed well and I guess the academy was swayed more by the emotional appeal of the cerebral palsy character than cruise's.

Sorry I offended you, Sonic-Manipulation, but your comment about Day-Lewis ("Most of the time he just sat in a wheelbarrow with his head on his shoulder mumbling, is that acting?") strikes me as the single stupidest remark I've ever come across on IMDB. Face it, Daniel Day Lewis is the finest actor in movies today, light years ahead of Cruise, and one of the greatest ever to work in the medium. Go to Rotten Tomatoes and read the reviews for "My Left Foot" "My Beautiful Laundrette" "A Room With a View" "In the Name of the Father" "Gangs of New York" and "There Will Be Blood." Or better, watch the movies. He's a genius.

That was such a stupid thing to say, he did much more then that in most scenes.

reply

When Day-Lewis won at that time, I was upset because I had not seen My Left Foot and I had seen Tom in Born on the 4th of July and Tom Cruise was outstanding. (His scene after coming home drunk, screaming and shouting at his parents about how they shot women and children[in Vietnam] and taking out the catheter and ending the scene by then having to be put in bed by his father as Ron(Tom) sadly whispers, "Who's gonna love me dad? Who's ever gonna love me?") Forget all his current nonsense, he was certainly deserving that year of the spot in the top five and in my mind the Oscar. For that reason, it took awhile before I ever got around to seeing My Left Foot. When I did, I felt the fool for avoiding it for so long. Both were outstanding performances, but Daniel most certainly deserved his Oscar that year. He is just unbelievable. It was a difficult vote, I am sure, but I would have given it to Daniel as well.

Have you ever even acted in a play or a movie in your life, you just said all that like mastering the mannerisms of a cerebral palsy victim is as easy as putting your pants on in the morning. Not only did he have to master the mannerisms but he also had to make you believe he was Christy brown, he also had to learn how to paint and type with his toes, he had to speak in a mumbled up voice that slowly progressed better throughout the movie and not only that but he had to learn it with an Irish Accent. The dude was so into character that he would have stage-hands lift him around the sets as if he was really crippled. I mean, he took method acting to a whole nother level.
Now don't get me wrong Cruise's performance in BOTFOJ was incredible but Daniel Day-Lewis's performance in My Left Foot was legendary.

reply

No question DDL is a better actor but in my opinion Tom Cruise should have won for Born On The 4th Of July.

reply

Cruises acting is mediocre compared to Lewises in My Left Foot

(you'll be saying that urself when you see the film)...

reply

Has to be Daniels performance. Enjoyed BOTFOJ but thought that Daniels acting was outstanding and very authentic...probably one of the finest pieces of acting you will ever see

People say "who says DDLs performance in CBrown is the best of all time?"
It's on DDls imdb trivia page:
His performance as Christy Brown in My Left Foot: The Story of Christy Brown (1989) is ranked #11 on Premiere Magazine's 100 Greatest Performances of All Time list.

I have seen both films. Cruise finalllly acted for once in his life and wasn't just a movie star in a role. He did VERY good! However, Daniel Day Lewis did better! The best man won.

reply

You're just right. Tom Cruise was flawless and powerful in Born on the 4th of July, very deserving, BUT Daniel Day-Lewis was even better. Wow, you should see My Left Foot. It's so moving and it's not like all the other films about disabled people. It's so human and DDL's performance! Gosh!

reply

Oh yes, he definitely deserved his Oscar, no doubt about it. I was watching it again for the first time in a few years recently and was struck by how much more I was engaged in Lewis's incredible portrayal. It is sheer magnificent acting.
My ex-husband who was still living in Ireland at the time didn't like it when we first saw it but when he watched it much later he had to say that Daniel was extraordinary in it.
I liked Born On The 4th July, I always thought it was a great film but DDL was just that much better an actor.
A lot of people were aggravated when Denzel Washington won for Training Day - stating that Sean Penn in I Am Sam should have clinched it, but although I thought Penn was good in Sam I personally thought Denzel deserved the oscar more.
There are always Oscar upsets for fans of the losing actors but mostly I think the board gets it right.
