Best Bond film?
I used to be a huge James Bond fan, and just adored all of the movies (yes, even 'Moonraker'. No, I'm not kidding). But now that I'm older and a little wiser, I've seen more movies and drifted from the Bond films.
And now I've come to the conclusion that 'Licence To Kill' is the best of the Bond movies.
Reasons:
1 - Bond goes rogue.
I've seen so many people, both online and in real life, who hate James Bond because they don't like spy stuff. They don't like the gadgets, or the doomsday weapons, and yet there's hardly any of these in this movie. It's a gritty story of revenge and a guy who just got pushed too far.
2 - Bond is angry.
For literally decades we've seen Bond as the slick, suave, martini slurping, woman sexing prick who deserves a slap in the face for being so undeservedly classy about everything.
Yet, here, we see Bond pushed to his very limit, and doing everything he can, pulling every resource, every favour, doing everything possible to get vengeance for his best friend. I've not seen any of the movies after Casino Royale, so I can't say if they did this again, but even if they did, Dalton would have done it best.
3 - the finale
Again, in Bond films we often see gadgets and doomsday weapons. But in this movie, we have a drug smuggling plot, and the finale boils down to this:
A lighter and some gasoline
Not a sword fight on a mountain side, not a shootout in a bar, not even falling off a satellite. You could even call it anti-climactic if it weren't for the fact that it's such a fitting end to such a bastard of a villain.
Anybody else feel the same, or have any comments?
