The Magic of shared interior monologues

One of my favorite gimmicks in Let It Ride is when the other characters share Trotter's interior monologues, which they, of course, cannot hear. A few times Trotter calculates to himself how much money other people (like the bathroom attendant or Simpson, the huge "bouncer" who provides standing room along the rail) might be making with their pursuits, and they always answer him as though they've heard his thinking. It's simple, clever and very funny. And it gives the film a ridiculously mystical, magical tone.

Just like when Quinella, the hamburger waitress, keeps asking why Trotter likes Faith Healer, a horse he just got a tip on but has never mentioned to her or anyone else. "How do you know I like Faith Healer?" he demands. "You could be walking around lucky," she answers, "and not even know it!"

The film repeatedly employs this intersection between comedy and mind-reading, with a huge payoff each time.
