Unbelievable just how sad and tragic this story is for everyone involved. Steven Stayner dies in a motorcycle accident in 1989, his brother becomes a serial killer, and now this.

I never forgot this film after seeing it on it's initial release in 1989 and then years later on Youtube

I substitute taught at Yokayo Elementary the day after Timmy was abducted. It was like teaching at a morgue. The whole town of Ukiah rejoiced when Timmy and Steven came to the police station. A classmate of mine who was a pilot attached a sign to his plane that said "Welcome Home Timmy!" and flew over Ukiah a good part of the day. That was a beautiful Sunday morning. Timmy had been abducted on Valentine's day. They found his valentines in a ditch on the street leading to his babysitters. Ukiah was thought to be fairly safe till Feb 14, 1980 for kids. Seeing it on TV was one thing but to be in Ukiah when this actually happened was something that could not be put into a movie. You had to be there. It is sad that Timmy passed on so young leaving young children and a wife of his own.

What did he die of? Yeah, I could check the attachment but don't have the time right now.

reply

Aneurism or something similar. Maybe a blood clot. I don't remember.

reply

Pulmonary Embolism (PE) - blockage of one of the arteries in the lungs.

reply

Was the embolism caused by smoking pot?

reply

Why in the world would you post that question?

reply

Thanks for posting. Well, this is tragic, but I do take solace that Steven Stayner saved him from certain molestation, and he was living what looks like a happy life: wife, children, career that meant something to him, etc.

Is it actually true that Timmy wasn't molested by Parnell? I know the movie indicated that Steven saved him in time to keep that from happening. But in real life, Steven and Timmy escaped about two weeks after Timmy's kidnapping (though the movie shortened that time span I think). I definitely hope it's true that Timmy was saved before any molestation happened but it seems unlikely that Parnell would keep from doing that for two weeks, especially given his history with Steven...

reply

Your absolutely right a sick *beep* like parnell could never go 2 weeks w/o molesting a child but I hope to god it's not true.

reply

That seemed to be what happened. He didn't get the chance to molest Timmy because Steven rescued him by escaping to the cops and turning the scumbag Parnell in. I think Steven realized Parnell was going to do the same thing to Timmy and felt he couldn't let Parnell do that.

White always denied being abused. It is believed that Steven probably protected him during those 2 weeks. I hate to think how, like maybe he let Parnell abuse him instead of Timmy. :(

So sad & awful.

reply

This is so sad. He seemed to have made a very good life for himself so it's such a shame he died so young.

One tragedy after another. The poor parents on both sides.

This story just keeps getting more and more tragic. How much bad luck can two families endure?

And am I right in reading that Parnell only got 7 years for kidnapping and molesting Steven Staynor and then was released after 5?

That is absurd!! He should've gotten a life sentence!!! Not to mention that after being released he tried to buy a kid in 2004.

What the hell is wrong with our justice system?

reply

Ukiah was in a state of disbelief when this happened thanks to the Statute of limitations. There should not be one in cases involving children.

reply

You have to be fuc*ing kidding me. No fuc*ing way that's what he got.

Yeah, that is true. He was given 25 years to life under the "three strikes" law for the last charge where he was trying to buy a four year old child but he was allowed to live with medical care for his remaining time on Earth which was four more years after his last conviction. It is sad his victims never got a chance to live a long life like he did.

He was sick and never should have been released from prison the first time but our laws are sadly lacking when it comes to prosecuting for the crimes he committed. He is a glaring example of why pedophiles cannot be rehabilitated and should be either locked up for life or exterminated since he not only had no remorse for what he did to Steven Stayner but continued to try to repeat his crimes.

reply

I wonder if all this was a chain reaction set in motion by Parnell's kidnapping or even something before that that turned Parnell into a molester. Ripple effects.

Yeah it is strange, isn't it?
