Eddie Murphy is a big-time Prince fan (he was at the MTV Premiere Party for "Purple Rain", as seen on the new special edition "Purple Rain" DVD set).

Prince released "Under a Cherry Moon" in 1986 - a personal vanity project he directed and starred in set in a more traditional, classical timeframe. All lush landscapes, gentleman and dames.

I'm sure Eddie must've seen it.

Amazing. Eddie must've been influenced by Prince.

Charlie vs Prince is one of THE funniest things I have ever watched (and I've watched a lot of funny $hit!) And I have to say that Harlem Nights was amusing.

There's actually some TRUTH in that "True Hollywood Stories" skit on Dave Chappelle's Show: Prince actually was a star basketball player in high school and I've heard that he can still hoop to this very day!!!

Have you ever noticed Eddie's mannerisms during his Prince period? He started acting like the guy!

I think he was also influenced by Jackie Chan, of all people. Jackie began making a similar kind of film in 1988. It's known in some English-speaking markets as Miracles but the original English title was Mr. Canton and Lady Rose. The surname of the detective in Eddie's film, Cantone, could be seen as a reference to this.

What also connects the two productions is the replacement of an actress. The difference is that you can still see a photo of the original actress in Jackie's film.
