I just saw this film for the first time recently.

I have to say that the rating for this movie is shockingly low. I would have expected this to be at least in the 7s. The story is at times predictable, but then most movies are. This holds your attention the whole way through. Scott's direction is top notch, the cinematography is spectacular, and the whole atmosphere of Japan in the movie is extremely well done. The acting jobs were also very solid all around.

Black Rain isn't as innovative as some of Scott's other films but it is perfectly executed for what it is. It should be approaching the top 250, not languishing with a 6.3.

Yes, this is a very good movie all around.....It's ridiculous some of the crap that gets 7-9 but this films gets ones by some people....they just don't appreciate a solid story line and direction. Ridley Scott is excellent.

Last year somewhere it was a 6.1, so it's moving up.

I absolutely agree. I watched this for the first time a couple of days ago and I found it absolutely gripping. Classic Scott stuff! I couldn't believe 6.4 when I got on here. I thought it would be at least 7, possibly 8. Just another nail in the coffin which reads, "Ridley Scott is possibly the most underrated director in Hollywood."

Excuse me but WTF, brainless 80 cheese??? That´s hard to digest, are you joking. This is way better than many of those 7-8 rating crappy movies. Only my opinion but I hold this film in high regards. Just saw it after at least 10 years and wow it was so great (again). Douglas is awesome, japanese cast is ace, music is great, 80´s Osaka is interesting to see etc. Just great!
Do watch it.

i gave it a 10,because I have been a fan of this film since i was a kid.To me too this movie is very very under-rated,but atleast it still continues to have solid sales on DVD/Blu-Ray.

This film has been in my Top 3 since I first saw it in theaters back in 1989. And the movie that I quote the most to this day.

I remember watching it when I was a kid and that scene where Charlie follows the motorcycle rider really stayed with me. I watched this film again the other day, and never realised how great it really is- very underrated. It doesn't make sense sometimes how some films sit under the radar and never get a mention. Black Rain is a classic. I watch blue ray with audio commentary. yes please

I also saw this one recently and I must agree with the poster who called it brainless 80s cheese.
Absolutely nothing special here, quite predictable with a plot that has been in far too many movies.
Around 6 is a pretty good rating,
I gave it 5, it just didn't appeal to me at all, I couldn't care less what happened next while watching it.

I would say about 95% of the movies on this site are poorly rated by users. There are some great movies on this site that are rated too harshly. Look at 48 Hours = great movie but the rating is a 6.9? Thats no way to treat an 80s classic.

It deserves an 8, and I gave it just that. Within it's genre it's about as classy and riveting as it gets. I saw it in the theater as a teen back then and I was blown away. The visuals, specially the almost geometrically designed fields towards the end of the film, the motorbike chase, the actions scenes, Garcia & the bikers, wow! The sound design is just superlative.
Most thrillers and "action" flicks today are a bunch of sorry hand-me-downs compared to this. So much character, flavor, texture. Sure it's larger than life, but it's gritty and dusty and sumptuous, all at the same time. The only thing '80s about the film is the music that plays in the clubs. Douglas really works as a shades-of-grey cop with his sandpaper growl, Garcia as the wide-eyed youngster, and the grrreat Ken Takakura - the wondrous Yakuza himself being stoic, noble, conveying a lifetime of experiences with one look...the film has an abundance of movie going pleasures. Ridley is not only a genius visualist, he's a damn fine actor's director. He may have some hack films in his resume(those are highly watchable too), but he's ridiculously under-rated and some serious Awards recognition is way overdue.
