Taking Place In An Alternate 1930s or 40s
Tying in with when Batman was created in 1939.
the 1930s/40s aesthetic makes the film and the character Batman feel more authentic and more stylised than say the Nolan trilogy.

Funnily enough there was a scene in Batman's first appearance where a guy falls into a vat of chemicals. Then Batman declares, "He'll never murder anyone again!" Cause the guy had murderd a bunch of men.
shareThe 30s/40s "Dark Deco" production design and aesthetics is one of my favorite aspects of the movie.
shareSuperman Returns kind of did the same retro/modern 1930s look
Maybe Burton would've done that with Superman Lives in the late 90s (in fact since that movie got pretty far ahead maybe some of Burtons ideas carried forward into Singers movie)
Burton would've done it with Superman Lives, there's concept art of The Daily Planet being very Empire State but bigger.
Would love to see the 1930s retro look in a future version of Superman, would look cool in a Superman video game.
The Animated Series also has the retro/modern 1930s look since it was capitalising on 89 Batman's success, same with the Arkham games and Gotham the TV series.
shareWhen the movie came out either 20/20 or one of the other news magazine shows had a story about it and mentioned that Burton was partly influenced by noir films that were popular in the 40s and 50s.

When does 'Batman' take place?
Very detailed explanation

meh, just because the newspaper props were from 1947, that doesn't automatically make the move set in that year
shareIt's like what TAS writer Paul Dini said it's like what if the 1939 World's Fair had gone on another 60 years or so.
