Why do we like Homer, again?

I've been seeing a lot of negativity posted about Homer, and how neglectful he is of his family, getting them into trouble, making them accomplices for his criminal activities, being drunk most of the time, being a sloth, etc, etc, etc. And I have to wonder, why do we like Homer Simpson? Does he have any redeeming qualities? I've seen all the earlier episodes and whilst he does these things, he feels bad and makes up for it. Maybe he can't help himself with the way he is. Is there a reason he is so appealing, aside from his incredible stupidity?

Many people have said that Peter Griffin is worse (I don't know, I think Family Guy is abhorrent), so what do you think? Is Homer really that bad, or is Peter worse? Or both?

homer is an awesome dude

Mainly because his stupidity and laziness are played for laughs. So people don't take his poorer personality traits very seriously.

Also he is shown to care about his family, and one who usually does the right thing by them in the end. In real life, Homer might be considered a bit of an oaf. But on TV, we tend to forgive a person's bad habits, if they're shown to care about those about them.

It's because in the earlier seasons of this show Homer was not a complete dumbass.. he cared for his family despite his shortcomings.

It's only post-season 6 that he became the assface he is today - a former shadow of the great character written in the pilot & season 1

I found him to be too angry in the first two seasons and his main gag was strangling poor Bart.

I have roommates, and it occurred to me that I am Homer to their Flanders. They are too straight, too nice, too religious, and just plain annoying. But in reality, I'm probably more the problem they are.
btw, in truth we get along fine. Just took me a while to adjust to having other people in the house.
