Sean Connery really irritates me

Although he is a good actor Sean Connery's accent in this film just is not right. In the movie he says he moved to the US when he was 10 years old.
Children are very susceptible to accent change if they move to a different place, and I know people who have moved to america and then 10 years later their accent has completely changed.

How could Sean Connery have been cast in this film with that accent? He still sounded extremely scottish!!!!!
His daughter (Meg Ryan's character) even said within her life they have moved around the US.

One final thing, is that surely Connery's daughter would have a slight accent like him.
My mum has a very strong accent and even though i was brought up away from where she was, because I heard her voice everyday I still picked up a little of her accent.

Also when Connery played Indiana Jones' father, he had a scottish accent which seemed really stupid.

Does anyone have any views on this?

Dude, its Sean Connery, he ALWAYS uses that accent. He played a russian sub captain with a scottish accent for gods sake.

Its one of those things everyone realizes, but are willing to overlook. Like in TV shows when average guys end up married/dating really hot women that they would never get in real life.

Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

He at least TRIED to do a Russian accent for Red October.

I know a guy who was BORN American, but because his parents were Mexican, he too has a slight Mexican accent. He learned his speech from hanging-around with them. Sooooo if Connery's parents were speaking Scottish, then he would retain the accent.

It might be hard to believe that Connery's character would still have a Scottish accent, but it is possible.
If he lived with people with Scottish accents and visited Scotland often he would not lose his accent to a great extent.
Connery, while not living in Scotland for many years,is a Scottish Nationalist and I think his little speech about his family having to migrate to improve their lives is a political point he wanted to make.

I actually live in Scotland so get fed up with this man preaching to us about our politics without actually living here.
He lives in Spain I understand.

Another point would be that there are thousands if not millions of Americans who claim to be "IRISH" but their families left Ireland 100 or more years ago and they have mixed background but they want to consider themselves Irish.

Connery lived in Marbella (Spain) for some time, but he went away years ago.

Hey, check out The Wind and the Lion. Sean Connery plays an Arab. I found it quite amuzing that an Arab would have a Scottish accent. An interesting movie by the way.

Connery actually doesn't use a strong accent in most films, if you where from Edinburgh or even Scotland you would notice he uses no slang, no twangs and pronounces his words fully. Yes he has a Scottish accent, but it only seems strong to you because it's different. So I can accept that he'd speak with this accent. Another thing is you say his daughter should have an accent because she'd pick it up from her father. That should lead to even more chances that Connery would keep his accent due to the fact he surley moved to the US with his parents.

If he was extremly Scottish, as you say you'd probably have a tough time understanding him.

Also for Henry Jones Sr. why does it make no sence? Did no one emegrate from other countries to America. One day a couple billion white people with European names just popped up? Indiana Jone's dad is infact Scottish.

But as for Russian Commanders, Spannish Minstrels, Greek Kings and Irish Cops it doesn't work.

reply

Sean Connery always adopts the same accent in whichever movie hes been in....

Russian sub commander--HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER

Irish(!!!!) Cop -- THE UNTOUCHABLES

Spanish (!!!) Ministrel -- HIGHLANDER

King Richard -- ROBIN HOOD

There must be plenty more ive missed

The comma sure is an amazing thing. smh.

reply

Yep, and some have a fetish over the commas.

No more IMDB boards for me!

Let's be honest here. Sean Connery is not a great actor. He doesn't create characters. He plays Sean Connery in whatever part he's cast it. He gets hired to work in films because he's Sean Connery and used to be James Bond.

One either accepts that and enjoys his work or not. That's just how it is.
