Question about Kat's affair

Hey guys, I absolutely loved every aspect of this film; the characters and each of their storylines were so well played.

That said, in thinking of Kat's affair with the married father, I was wondering if anyone had seen a movie that had a similar plot, (an older man, a younger woman), but ended happily for the two lovers? Weird question, but I just thought I would ask. Thank you!

Well, here is the thing: Usually they give old actors anyway younger girls (actresses)... and it always seem to work (in a script)

reply

Well, Julia Roberts was obviously younger than Richard Gere in Pretty Woman.

This goes way, way, way back, but you should try to find Love in the Afternoon with Gary Cooper and Audry Hepburn. It's a much younger woman and a much older man, but neither is encumbered with a spouse.

Wow that is actually a really interesting question. I don't know. Most end in heartbreak or murder ala Match Point haha. You asked this six years ago but PERHAPS you're still curious...

I think it's hard to find closure in an affair story unless you end the affair. Usually they start off with an unhappy marriage to justify it, and the unhappy person realizes the problem is in themselves, not their marriage necessarily. So they end the affair to work on that. Hmm.
Although I can think of a movie (History is Made at Night) where the woman tells the husband she's leaving him at the very beginning, and this obviously seems justified because he's on the evil side of things, and then she meets the man of her dreams and it ends with them together (I won't tell you how...). So I think it all depends on how you frame it and in order to bring any closure to the story, the characters have to start off with no issues within themselves. I guess these movies would be more about the Classic Love Story and less about the characters themselves. More allegorical than anything.

VERY VERY INTERESTING THOUGH! I'm going to keep on the lookout for different examples. Thank you six-years-ago-person.

Jack & Sarah (1995)
Similar situation, single dad, baby girl, young woman becomes the nanny and falls in love with the dad.
He's widowed though, not married, but there's a happy ending of sorts.

There's _one_ that I can think of-- and he's not married in it, just a free and easy rich bachelor, the "I'll never marry" type. It's "Love in the Afternoon" with Audrey Hepburn and Gary Cooper.

Oops-- should have read the whole thread before I posted!

Not when the man is married.

Tim's wife looked like she could be his mother! And damn was she stiff and uptight when she met Kat! Total stick up her ass!

reply

I just watched that scene where Tim's wife comes back. It seems to me that she was "uptight" because she noticed both Tim's and Kat's reactions to her and to each other and she figured out that something had happened between them while she was gone. The woman had my sympathy.
