Healthy-looking actresses

Yo, I'm watching this on TV right now, and it's shocking to see actresses that actually have an ounce or two of fat between their skin and their bones. They aren't overweight, just normal healthy-thin as opposed to the current fad of skeletal-thin. Even Julia Roberts! Crazy how things have changed...

reply

The casting was excellent all-around in that film!

The girls looked realistic, yet very attractive.

Made me want to go visit Mystic just to check out the Portugese-American girls living there!

reply

lol, believe me- the pizza is reason enough to go there. But I agree with the original poster, the image put forth in films like this was much healthier than in recent films.

reply

I second the pizza recommendation. It's unbelievably good. My husband and I visited Mystic on our honeymoon and it really is a wonderful, warm, beautiful place with lots to do.

Also, I have to agree with the above comments. I can't believe how often I watch a movie from the 80's (or earlier) with girls I thought were beautiful and grew up wishing to look just like...

None of them have clavicles sticking out, every rib showing (that just grosses me out), boney shoulders, hip bones that look pointy...or the worst...that gap space up high between their thighs were you can see right through to what's behind them!

I miss young pretty actresses...maybe it's just me, but when they get too skinny, even in their teens, it makes them look real old...or maybe it's the drugs and smoking and other 'crutches' they use to keep them a size 0?

reply

I completely agree. Annabeth Gish is the only one of the young actresses who looks to be sort of bordering on heavier, but I actually think that's because of her boxy wardrobe...she wears those shorts and her legs are skinny as heck.

Hey, um, did anyone else notice that Julia Roberts has like a J-Lo booty in this movie?!

reply

Agree with all of you! I think these gals are beautiful and thin but not skinny. What is wrong with being gorgeous and having curves? I hate the way society pushes women and young girls toward this insane "ideal" of being so thin you can see every bone in your body. I hate seeing women so thin you can see all the bumps in their spine. It grosses me out. I wish we could go back to the time when women with curves where considered beautiful. There are dangers of being too thin and I just can't imagine all the dieting and working out these women have to do just to maintain a size 0. What is next, a size -2?

I noticed Julia's behind in this movie, you really couldn't miss it especially in one of the first scene's when she is serving the 3 guys at the table their pizza and beer. I thought she looked great in this movie. Actually, I thought she was better looking in this movie and in Steel Magnolia's than in most of the others but that is just my humble opinion.

There is so much more to being beautiful than being a size 0. Oh sure, looks are what first attracts people but if there is nothing more to you than your looks and super thin body, heaven help you. What happens when you get older and are no longer able to maintain that image?

What really gets me about the way our society and Hollywood, etc is about women and body image is that you don't see this with men. Guys are able to be heavier and it isn't a big deal yet women are constantly made to feel bad if they are not a size 0. How many actors out there that are hardly think that are still considered sex symbols? There are a lot of them. But women are only considered sex symbols if they are super skinny.

reply

Hope you don't take this as unfriendly argument...it's just meant to be a friendly contradiction :)

In all fairness, you don't see a whole lot of John Candy (RIP) types in "leading man"/hero roles unless it's a comedy. Think of every major drama or romance you've ever seen...you've got your Antonio Banderas, Brad Pitt, Gerard Butler, Tom Cruise, George Clooney, etc. The heavier men in Hollywood are pretty much always cast in supporting roles or as comic relief. Might I add, I don't think this is fair either. But I guess when America wants a love scene, America does not want to see pasty fat men rolling around on a bed with a beautiful woman. I guess it's just not believable. I've seen a few cases of this in real life, but in general, you don't see John Candy types walking hand in hand with Penelope Cruz on the streets.

reply

Okay, but there's a bit of a difference between John Candy and a woman who's a size 6 as opposed to 00. I take your point, but the comparison doesn't track.

It might be a good idea then, for the lot of you to run and check out the "Romancing Vanity" page on Facebook.

I agree about the women with curves and actual shape. Meat on one's bones is highly sexy on a woman, if all that meat is below the waist. Skinny chicks are not hot. But occasionally a slim one can be rather cute, I suppose.

reply

Amen. I saw Julia Roberts in an interview once and she, of herself at that (Mystic Pizza) time, said (in slight paraphrasal) that the woman that she became, was at the moment of the interview "had twenty less pounds and knew twenty more things." She mentioned "knowing" not to eat Oreos, etc. and that popcorn goes straight to the ass. Strange things, but interesting in the sense that a life or world without pleasures like Oreos doesn't sound like a very happy one NOR does it make sense that someone who makes movies would deride the very delicious staple of her very arena--the theater.

Okay, Julia...you've "lightened" up, now lighten up.

reply

Funny, because popcorn by itself it practically harmless. It's the butter and salt that is bad.

reply

It's funny, because all the men I meet and a lot of comments on the internet seem to say that men like it when a woman has curves. Then why is that scary skinny picture our beauty ideal? If the men don't want it why are women doing this to themselves?

reply

If the men don't want it why are women doing this to themselves?

Same reason women wear too much make up and spend their earnings on "fasion" clothes, to impress other women.
Men do not care, if we did, we'd buy that crap.

reply

I am a man and I am sick of hearing women say they think what all men want. I am also sick of women complaining about body shaming , when they are doing the same to thin women.
Some women are naturally thin. And the word "curvy" is talking about shape and not size.
Thin women can be curvy. So many assume that the word "curvy" is reserved for heavy women. That is not correct. And not all of us like he same thing. It's a sad affair when people think Mellisa Macarthy is considered "curvy" or "healthy" when that is obviously not the case. Julia looks great in this movie, she is tall and can carry a few extra pounds.
The Anabele Gish character is a bit overweight in this movie. Nothing wrong with that it is what it is. Not all actress are skinny today, that's BS.

reply

How do you know Melissa is not healthy?

It IS more preferred for them to be skinny. And those are the ones we hear/read about the most.

Sorry, while I agree it is nice to see normal sized people, Julia Roberts a** is huge in this.

Very noticeable.

reply

I read this in the voice of that valley-girl from the opening of "Baby Got Back".

That song verges into fetishism & I've never been a huge fan of rap. But one thing I always admired about rap was its unvarnished honesty about the male libido. Rock music lost its way on this point. Pop culture would be more healthy if it hadn't.

reply

I can't be sure but I'd be willing to bet Julia Roberts was wearing a "fanny- pack" because her butt never looked that...."developed" again after this film. I think she pulled a "Jessica Simpson" on us!

"Stick with me baby, and you'll be fartin' thru silk!"

reply

Julia thought her hips and butt was too big. That is why she had a body double in "Pretty Woman".

Damn!! My posts attract so many nutty B-A-S-T-A-R-D-S!

reply

I think this is one of the only films where Julia Roberts actually looked pretty.

Her arms don't look like sticks and her face isn't skeletal.

Aagh; you're a HEDGE!

She did?

reply

Julia thought her hips and butt was too big. That is why she had a body double in "Pretty Woman". <---LOL No. It's 'cause she wasn't curvy ENOUGH.

It is very realistic considering they work in a Pizza restaurant. If that movie was made today they would have young actresses that could not act at all playing those leads, and the only fat one would be Joe. I shutter to think of the cast they would have today playing these parts.

reply

Back in the eighties, most actresses looked that way.

Damn!! My posts attract so many nutty B-A-S-T-A-R-D-S!

reply

You're all right.

Julia was at her peak attractiveness here, in the late 1980s. This and Steel Magnolias really shows her beauty. Before fame got to her head and she became that egocentric, self absorbed money mogul she is today ever since Pretty Woman. I much preferred her when she was new on the scene.

reply

I feel like we are moving back in this direction (fingers crossed) with Scar Jo, Jennifer Lawrence, and Mindy Kaling to name a few. I realize the biggest draws are still hideously bony females, but I'm happy to see success among some more realistic looking actresses nowadays.

In my biz I meet and get to know a lot of men that all say they prefer women with meat on their bones and that most women are far too skinny for their tastes. They famous ones, athletes & film stars, marry the skinny ones for appearances but they have healthier women they love to sleep with on the side.

Sad things have come to this. Its also ironic, if you can say that, that gay men are more dominant in the fashion world and dominate dictating what is hot and what is not for women for whom they are not even attracted to!!!! Most women dress and diet to impress other women not men. I remember when it was hot to wear those high heels with the 3 inch thick Frankenstein looking heel. Women were all wearing them in the late 90's but I still stuck with my thin heeled high heels and was getting hit on more than my other friends. I dress for men not other women.

... End of line.

reply

Oh please, actresses today are not that thin!

I still know what stars belong to us

reply

Oh please, actresses today are not that thin! <---Some complain that the studios call them out to be too huge at a Size 2.
