Extremely underrated!

I just saw it and in my opinion it's almost great. Amazing performance, some awesome shots; the suspense is slow at the beginning, but dynamic at the end... Some quite good scary moments. Excellent direction.

The monkey doesn't look evil or ugly or something. It's somewhat cute, that's why it's in fact eerie.

My rating: at least 8/10, maybe even 9.

I also liked the association with "Misery".

I loved it loads, but only a cheesy fun flick. I wouldn't say it's an amazing film, but the direction was great, as was the suspense and so on.

Really? Worst film you ever saw? Well, my next one will be better. Hello? Hello?

I thought it was pretty good too. I remember seeing it on Showtime once last year.

I liked it too...but it made me permanetly afraid of cappochin(spell?) monkies! lol

it's underrated. because it deserves to be underrated because it's one of the dumbest, most pointless, and just downright *beep* movies ever!

But you take the time to purposely come on the board for a film you hate to right negative comments like that on it?

If so,I must say the cliché statement….GET A LIFE!

I thought this was one of the most hilarious movies I've seen. Whenever I explain the premise of the story to other people, they likewise find it absurdly humorous.

Sounds like you don't know what the word "underrated" means.

I agree! Monkey Shines is criminally underrated. It's a very good horror flick. Or it could even be a very good comedy, it just depends on how you see it. I think someone should make Monkey Shines 2, it would be amazing.

I remember seeing this on video when it first came out. At the time, it seemed really frightening! I think that medical technology is so much more advanced now, it is a little bit silly.

I still love it though! I think the "Misery" aspect is what is so scary! To be at the mercy of an intelligent primate, who has been transformed by a sleep deprived junkie injecting it with human brain cells until it is able to read your thoughts and act on them!!!! C'mon, that is the stuff horror stories are made of!

I agree whole-heartedly ... one of the most under-rated of horror movies, and up there with Romero's best.

But you ARE Blanche ... and I AM.

I agree as well, VERY underrated. Someone mentioned the monkey not being evil or ugly, I agree with that too. He never did anything obviously unbelievable.

I spent my entire childhood growing up. What a waste.

It has been a long time since I have seen this film and no network on TV will air it anymore and that is sad. If they do it is when we are more than likely in bed asleep and unable to watch it at all.

Yes you are correct that a innocent cute looking monkey that is this evil creature. This is very interesting but I loved it though! WOW I cannot believe it has been 20 years since this movie came out! I was 16 years old at that time when it came out in movie theaters.

I thought this movie was quite a good suspense. It didn't scare me, but I got the point of it being in the horror genre. Stephen King.
What I find disturbing is all these people saying the movie is hilarious. If you read the main scenes they find funny are those that make one think they find disabilities funny. They were, or are, the kids whom made fun of the 'crippled' kids in their schools. One example I read was based on when the lead was trying to revive the female lead with his chair. I didn't see that as funny. I thought how bad it would suck to have to not be able to lean down and be able to physically revive her. It's either that they find disabled people to be jokes or they just didn't get the idea that the lead was playing a man that was unable to move his arms or his legs. He had to use his head to the best of his ability, mostly his mouth.
The monkey was being given some kind of gene altering medication by the scientist buddy, and it made it more human thinking, but with a telekinetic link to the lead character. That if anything could have been the argument against the movie. i.e. 'Come on, that could never happen...'
Plus, they've made soooo many 'horror' movies since where genetic altering has been done on other species. I don't see the posts stating 'this movie was so funny I cried, peed my pants, etc'. The negative posts are more along the lines that the plots were unrealistic and nonsensical.'
The main thing is to realize when the movie was made, no cgi availablility. Movies are a transportation to another time, place, etc. It's easy to watch older movies and catch yourself thinking back to that time or to what it would have been like to have lived in such a time. That is if you allow yourself to enjoy the movie rather than be critical of a movie from the opening credits.

I think this movie holds up just fine, if you don't want to think of it as a horror movie, then look it as a good suspense.

I don't know. It was alright.

Always saw it as a suspense/dark comedy. There are certainly some hokey scenes throughout, but also some good atmospheric stuff. What I hate most are the "the monkey wasn't scary" nimrods. It wasn't supposed to be scary!!! It's the *situation* that's scary. It's the whole point of the juxtoposition of a big, strapping dude, former athlete, who is being terrorized by something the size of a kitten. Never seen Gremlins? Bug? The Swarm? Rats? None of the creatures in those films was the least bit physically threatening; it was more the chaos they created around the helpless humans trying to battle them.

And Beghe was great, considering some of the ridiculous stuff he has to do in the film.
