I thought this movie was quite a good suspense. It didn't scare me, but I got the point of it being in the horror genre. Stephen King.
What I find disturbing is all these people saying the movie is hilarious. If you read the main scenes they find funny are those that make one think they find disabilities funny. They were, or are, the kids whom made fun of the 'crippled' kids in their schools. One example I read was based on when the lead was trying to revive the female lead with his chair. I didn't see that as funny. I thought how bad it would suck to have to not be able to lean down and be able to physically revive her. It's either that they find disabled people to be jokes or they just didn't get the idea that the lead was playing a man that was unable to move his arms or his legs. He had to use his head to the best of his ability, mostly his mouth.
The monkey was being given some kind of gene altering medication by the scientist buddy, and it made it more human thinking, but with a telekinetic link to the lead character. That if anything could have been the argument against the movie. i.e. 'Come on, that could never happen...'
Plus, they've made soooo many 'horror' movies since where genetic altering has been done on other species. I don't see the posts stating 'this movie was so funny I cried, peed my pants, etc'. The negative posts are more along the lines that the plots were unrealistic and nonsensical.'
The main thing is to realize when the movie was made, no cgi availablility. Movies are a transportation to another time, place, etc. It's easy to watch older movies and catch yourself thinking back to that time or to what it would have been like to have lived in such a time. That is if you allow yourself to enjoy the movie rather than be critical of a movie from the opening credits.
I think this movie holds up just fine, if you don't want to think of it as a horror movie, then look it as a good suspense.
