(Spoilers) Why didn't those Englishmen make sure Tony was really dead?

I have a hard time believing those Englishmen who went all the way across the world would take Mr. Todd's word with a grain of salt that Tony was dead without examining the body? Couldn't they see him moving in his sleep in the hammock during the Peewee party?

What choice did they have have if the Guinness character wanted to dodge the possibility? Considering where they were the search probably just wanted whatever evidence (even minor) that they could get. So how long did Wilby character remain?
