Why is there NO singing in this one?
This was a broadway musical! MUSICAL. I think the new version did a better job with making this movie. At least it got me excited from beginning to end.

shareI don't understand what you're trying to say.
The first Hairspray was not a musical.
The musical was based on John Waters film... 14 years later.
Then, this year, the musical version was turned into a movie.
:]
Lol. There is no singing because this movie was made BEFORE the musical, the musical is based on this movie, and the new movie is based on the musical.
Hoped that cleared things up.
Yes thanks, it did.
Nice to know something as amazing as the musical came from this crappy little not-even-worth-your-time movie. Who'dve though that the whole something good from something bad thing could and would be so radically extreme?
One homeless guy sings a song he hears,in the original.I think musicals make more money than songless plays. I can't believe that the song "Hairspray" is not in the new version at all. It's one of my favorites or is my fave song in the first Hairspray. It plays during the beginning and end credits of the 1998 "Hairspray" I should re record and make a video of the song "Hairspray"
shareif your not from baltimore, maryland or anywhere in maryland then i dont think its as funny or as exciting for the people that are from baltimore or anywhere else in maryland. im from baltimore and its really crazy to see such a state favorite and then when the musical came out people started wanting to go to maryland and now with the new movie little kids are convinving their parents to come to baltimore because Zac Efron was in the movie. its really weird and crazy. but i love it

Ok, that's kinda harsh. My friend Amanda said she LOVED the first one. Now I've never seen it, but I plan to.

If you had seen it, you would most likely agree with me as I have truly never seen something so atrocious. And thats saying alot since I made myself sit through High School musical. As for this being just a movie before it became a musical-when the movie came out, I had no idea that a movie even came before it. And when I found out and saw it, it was not only non-musical but the most pointless thing I'd ever seen? Most musicals made now are remakes of musicals made decades ago. What was I supposed to expect? Maybe some of the songs would have made it more bearable.
shareOkay, if I ever needed a reason to never watch the musical remake, people like you have given it to me. Hairspray (1988) was John Waters' most carefully crafted forage into the mainstream. The music and the dancing was inspirational! I still put a little gravy on my mash potatoes and will dance to Lawrence Welk if I have to! The acting was the best he ever had before he started regularly hiring professionals. He discovered RICKY LAKE, Michael St. Gerard and Clayton Prince! "Hairspray: The Musical" looks like the movie version of one of those colorful corn syrup straws that tasted like toxic waste and used to be sold in candy stores. I am not joking, I shutter to think that a person who would complain about the lack of singing ever set eyes on one of the best musical movies ever! The music is a part of the theme, in fact like Baltimore, it's a supporting character. Get an education!
"Nice to know something as amazing as the musical came from this crappy little not-even-worth-your-time movie."
How can you say such a thing?
Go watch some other stupid teen movie and leave movies like this alone. It's a cult classic for a reason.
You are clearly an idiot.

Well, enjoy the Hairspray musicals sequel that is coming out in 2010. It is written by John Waters himself, the genius that wrote this crappy little not-even-worth-your-time movie.
This is glue. Strong stuff. - Elwood Blues of The Blues Brothers
"crappy little not-even-worth-your-time movie"? Please put the crack pipe down, leave the meth lab and step away from the DVD player. Keep you hands where we can see them.
you say you'll change the Constitution well, you know, we all want to change your Head
I think a lot of people just don't get the humor in the original movie, it's more subtle and not as in-your-face as the musical version. The original movie had much more to the characters since there wasn't the time spent on musical numbers. The musical was ok, but the first movie will always be my favorite. No one will ever compare to Divine, especially not Travolta in a rubber suit!
shareI agree, rdpepper. I think the people who dislike this film, are more then likely very young and don't understand "adult humor". I mean, if the the joke isn't spelled out for them, they don't get it. These kids these days just don't have very much taste.
I'm talking to a Rasta Man about a bongo....
I did not grow up in Baltimore. I loved the original "Hairspray" and still love it. It's not a piece of crap. If it were so bad, nobody would have ever considered adapting it as a musical 14 years later. It would have just languished in video stores.
The new version is a lot of fun but it's the original I love. It's less polished, edgier and has that John Waters satirical tone without the gross-out humor of his earlier works. (Even though 1974's "Female Trouble" is a masterpiece.)
The original turns 20 this month. Happy anniversary "Hairspray"! Thank you John Waters, Mink Stole, Ricki Lake, Michael St. Gerard, Ruth Brown, Leslie Ann Powers, Shawn Thompson and all the rest for such a fun movie. And in memory of Divine, the original and best Edna.

Welcome to the wonderful world of John Waters!
Tracy became so instantly popular because of her outgoing personality and willingness to stand up for herself and not take crap from anyone.
Waters is also known for doing films about those that are the underdog, in this case, an overweight teenage girl. That's what makes this film so wonderful.

LOVED the 1988 film - rushed out and bought the soundtrack immediately (on vinyl back then - even had to get it shipped from the US to Oz.) Bought the DVD & CD recently (to replace my worn out video tape and battered vinyl) Resisted seeing the (musical) remake, but finally used a free movie pass so I wouldn't feel ripped off if I didn't like it...So, my opinion??? Still love the original - it's much harder edged and I love John Waters' black humour. There are no songs in the musical version which top Rachel Sweet's theme song: Hairspray and the rest of the soundtrack is excellent, most songs would have been very hard to come by otherwise, for example it was great to hear the original version of Shake a Tailfeather (am also hugely into the first Blues Brothers film)and now I know what the "Madison" looked like, Brad's comment to Janet in Rocky Horror Picture Show (another all time favourite of mine) finally made sense!! "Say, does anyone know how to Madison?" (said after the "Time warp" was performed)
However, I did find myself enjoying the 2007 version, once I got my head around how different it was. As a bit of enjoyable entertainment with catchy (but not overly memorable) songs and pretty good acting I didn't find myself regretting seeing it. (especially as I took care not to go to a "singalong" screening!) I do wish that all the "johnny come latelies" would be a little more grown up when making comparisons between the two films - I suspect it's somewhat generational though!! The (older) fans of the original have mostly grown up with a different perspective on movies, humour and "life, the universe and everything!!" (speaking of which, I absolutely HATED the movie version of Hitch Hikers Guide...) However, when the DVD and soundtrack CD end up in the $10 bargain bin at the local supermarket, I will probably purchase them!
So let's all just agree to disagree!!
It's like The Producers, which started off as a non-musical movie by Mel Brooks, then became a HUGE Broadway musical, which then got its own movie adaptation.
shareLots of movies have gone that route. "Cabaret" started out as the play "I am a Camera" then the movie of the same name, then the musical "Cabaret" then the movie.
Same thing with "Chicago" which has had several incarnations -it was even a silent film.

i think its sad when people dont get the absurdist vision and humor of waters
the original is brilliant
it is a personal film, unlike the musical, which has no soul
Actually, I find you to be too upset about the movie. That's fine if you don't like it but, you seem unhealthy about it.

Hairspray '88 ---> movie
Hairspray on Broadway ---> musical based on '88 movie
