I personally LOVED John Travolta as Edna, and I wasn't as crazy about Divine, even though I do think he was funny. :) But that's probably A), because I absolutely love musicals, and B), I saw the remake first. But even if you like the original better, I think you'll still be able to enjoy the musical.

I am a die hard fan of the 1988 version and did enjoy the musical version but I found John Travolta the worst thing about the movie. There is no one that can play the role better than Divine. I still think they should have hired Harvey Fierstein.

I prefer Travolta. someone in an earlier post remarked about how whimsical he was. I COMPLETELY agree. He was light on his feet and adorable and as far as I'm concerned, flat-out the best Edna there ever has been.

I love JT (John Travolta) as Edna, but I love Divine as Edna too. They both did a great job. Never compare a musical to a non-musical, it's just pointless.

John was so light at his feet, you can think that the fat suit isn't that really heavy for him. And Divine has hilarious lines, like when s/he watched Tracy who said "I have a crush on somebody" then she goes in front of the TV "Who, I'd like to know." LOL!

I love Charlie Cox, Hayden Christensen, and Brandon Routh!!!

I love both.

However, it seems like all you guys are complaining about his accent, and you hate him for it, get over it.

P.S. That terrible actor just got a golden globe nomination for Edna and is veyr close to an oscar. Go John!

Each was good in the context of the movie. The original was dirty, trashy, in your face. Plus, it helps if you know who John Waters is; it helps you understand where he's coming from. Divine was perfect for the movie. The musical is made for a broader audience. People who want to know John Waters or know there's a guy in drag, but are not interested in the original. John Travolta was perfect for the musical. I loved both of them. They made it their own character and it was nice not seeing someone try to be Divine as Edna.

No one on the face of the earth could replace Divine. Such a unique individual only comes along very rarely.

With that said I don't think JT did a bad job. I understand what people are saying about the accent but I think he was attempting to do a Baltimore accent and it came out a little forced.

BTW I loved John Water's cameo as the flasher...very fitting.

I disagree.

I prefer John Tarvolta.

Divine was an aging transvestite and was very dumpy.

i found divine gross and completely unbelievable as a mother.

Johnny T rocks.

Divine could act. John Revolta can't. Period.

reply

John Travolta did a great job, but he certainly is no Divine. He surprised me though, and did much better than I expected him too.

Divine=Well adjusted gay man
Travolta=Closeted effed up gay man.

It was pathetic seeing Travolta in a dress. Boy, did his career ever sink!

When I watched the 2007 'Hairspray,' I kept looking out for John Travolta, knowing that he was in the film somewhere. It took me a long time before I realised that it was him playing Edna in drag. But Divine was the real thing. So it's Divine for me.
