It's not THAT funny.
It has its funny moments, some really good jokes, excellent writing, and all that.
That's not what makes this movie great, though, in my opinion. To me, the entertainment factor is really high, so that's why I watch it. Even scenes that are not that funny are entertaining, and that makes this movie great fun to experience.
Cleese's charisma and performance, the situations, the atmosphere (eighties, sigh, I want to go back), the scenes and locations (I really love Cleese's character's house and all that), even the musics and such are really interesting.
Some lines are also so unique, it feels like a breath or fresh air to listen to these characters talk. Who has ever said in any other movie "You dress really interestingly"?
Sure, it's a funny movie, but I've seen funnier ones. This movie can still be better than those, because of its charm and all the things I mentioned in this post. Plus, the characters are quirky and fascinating in their own right. The only thing I really hate about this movie is that ugly hag that everyone worships for some reason - I have rarely seen such a man-face pass off as some kind of female, especially with a short hair like that, urgh!
But with a good vomit bucket, you're going to be prepared for this movie and enjoy it.
