This movie has not held up for me

I was about 16 when this came out and thought it was hilarious. I watched this again the other day and it just fell flat. I smiled some but didn't laugh once. I think humor has just changed too much. I don't think a lot of stuff from the 70's and 80's is that funny anymore but I like Blazing Saddles much better than this (the best Brooks film imo). I think I hold the OT with too much reverence now too, and think a Spaceballs sequel of the PT would have been pretty good since those are atrocious.

I actually found it more funny than I used to.

I guess its because most comedies now are full of blatant sex jokes. I'm no prude but sometimes it gets to much.

Interesting point. Most comedies nowadays substitute vulgarity and excess in place of genuine warm humor like Spaceballs. There's just no charm, substance or subtlety anymore. It's kind of ugly and in your face. I'd imagine this viewing film now would be a refreshing change.

I think that's why I like films like Trading Places and Stir Crazy.

Not that I hate all modern comedies.

I love Trading Places and Stir Crazy! The last recent good comedy I saw was Tropic Thunder. I gave up on contemporary comedies a while ago now and don't expect much from them. They seem to follow the same formula and I get tired of it. I miss comedies that had their own style and spirit.

I love Tropic Thunder.

I have a soft spot for daft comedies like Scary Movie(s) and A Haunted House, but I can guess you can say they were probably influenced by Spaceballs, among others of the time

Tropic Thunder does borrow a lot of 'The Three Amigos' (so owes a lot to the 80s era), and is basically a remake of that, but it is still a great comedy that stands out in the contemporary genre. I can watch that movie all the time and not get bored of it and RDJ's part is one of the finest comedic performances in a long time probably the best since the days of John Candy. The only thing that lets it down is the "full retard" skit (too much) and Matthew McConaughey.

I haven't seen a haunted house but the scary movies had some good scenes in them.

Yeah I'm not really a fan of Matthew McConaughey either. I loved the full retard thing. The first A Haunted House is better. The 2nds ok

I remember liking it a lot when I was younger. Just watched it again for the first time in probably 20 years. It doesn't hold up real well but it still had some funny parts to it. But I do miss comedies from the 80's and 90's. The majority of comedies these days are rated R and rely mainly on sex and bathroom jokes. Same with most comedies on TV too. I wish they would realize you can be hilarious and still be G/PG/PG-13.
