I was about 16 when this came out and thought it was hilarious. I watched this again the other day and it just fell flat. I smiled some but didn't laugh once. I think humor has just changed too much. I don't think a lot of stuff from the 70's and 80's is that funny anymore but I like Blazing Saddles much better than this (the best Brooks film imo). I think I hold the OT with too much reverence now too, and think a Spaceballs sequel of the PT would have been pretty good since those are atrocious.
George Lucas said he loved Spaceballs, though. Hamill was either joking or had sense of humor bypass. The movie had John Candy, Rick Moranis and Mel Brooks. Why could it not be at least amusing haha?
I think it's hard for a comedy to stand up 100% funny as when it was first released, especially one 28 years later, and more especially a spoof.
Having said that though, I feel that Spaceballs has managed to still be funny, though not 100%.
I watch Spaceballs in the background whilst doing work and I find that I wind up watching it.
The line I am your father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roommate is still classic though.
Lone Starr: What's that make us?
Dark Helmet: Before you die there is something you should know about us, Lone Star. Lone Starr: What? Dark Helmet: I am your father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roommate. Lone Starr: What's that make us? Dark Helmet: Absolutely nothing! Which is what you are about to become.
It's still good. I watched it last night and chuckled throughout, and let's be honest, it holds up a hell of a lot better than the Star Wars prequels. Spaceballs is juvenile fun with some clever lines and moments sprinkled throughout. No, it isn't Blazing Saddles nor Young Frankenstein, but it is far better than everything that came after it. I consider it to be Mel Brooks' last good film.

Well it appears you're right... Unfortunately. I watched this movie many times when I was younger, and thought it was hilarious. I went and revisited it today, and although it brought some nostalgic smiles to my face, overall it didn't seem to hold up all that well.
This is the first movie I rented when my family got its first VCR, and I think I watched it in four or five chunks just to get through it. But over the years it grew on me and its safe to say I think I like it much better now than I did as a kid.
Saw this many times over back in the late 80's, and remember laughing myself silly at most of it. I just saw it again now on Netflix (because I found out that my girlfriend had NEVER seen it, and I felt I kind of just HAD to show it to her). It didn't really fall flat, I still found it funny. But I did notice someting I hadn't picked up on before; It is slow, and occasionally too quiet! I mean, 'Spaceballs' has a few bursts of music-scenes, most notably the Mega Maid evacuation scene, but it is often just completely devoid of music, that adds a feeling of it being slow, and the often overly enunciated dialogue adds a lot to that feeling. It's like there is a micro pause built in after every delivery, which drags out every retort - every joke - for just a little bit to long (the over enunciation is most frequent in Brooks's own scenes - and there is a distinct quality difference in terms of acting between him and....well, most others in this film). The micro pauses might be seen as some sloppy editing, but most likely it is just a sign of the times. 'Spaceballs' is after all almost 30 years old now, and editing is a lot quicker/sharper now than it was before.
So what am I saying here... I guess I'm agreeing with you, in a way.
-If made by George Lucas, this would be re-released 3 times - and by now be mostly cgi.
Couldn't have said it better. I felt that same way the last time I watched it. Although, I totally disagree on the Mel Brooks part! His scenes were always my favorite as a kid, and I still find the funniest. Oddly enough it's the stuff with Lone Star and Barf I find to be the slowest.
