Best line ever. That's pretty sharp writing. That's ridiculously clever. That whole scene. The way all the characters play off each other. The deputy asks him three times, in a very realistic manner. Seems like they ad-lib. That's great directing.
shareJust saw Raising Arizona for the first time last night and loved that whole scene.
It was interesting because it really showed the Coen's style really starting to shine, the style that would never quite be fully realized until Fargo.
That scene, and the entire car/convenience store attendant/dogs chase were my favourites.
And yeah, no ad-libs in a Coen Bros movie, but like you say, they beauty of it was it SEEMED ad-libbed.
