Why did I hate this?

Ok

I'm a Woody fan (I think) but this one I hated…maybe because the whole movie is consciously like a typical 40's bad radio drama…use of music is so cloying..especially if you know the tunes…they go into the subway...oh surprise!!!! "Take The A-Train" Duhhhh

Left me thinking Is Woody actually just an Eric Rohmer wanna-be? with the voice overs, same fonts for credits sequence, lotsa dialog (and in this case YIKES!! so contrived..but as I said, maybe SUPPOSED to sound like a radio show from 40s?)

So this was just a bad one…for me…not gonna give up...

You probably weren't alive to remember this period in our history. It was wonderful and just as it's portrayed. He's an amazing writer.

It's exactly as you described, however, whether you're a fan of it or not is up to you. I personally love this film. Woody has gone through stages and his Late 70's to 1990 Era of Filmmaking is one of my favorites of any Director. Annie Hall, Manhattan, Stardust Memories, Alice, Crimes and Misdemeanors, Radio Days... That's not even the entire list. That's impressive.

I'm not much of a Woody Allen fan, so that may be why this film and another obscure Allen film, "Zelig," are my only two movies of his that I like.

reply

I hope I'm never so cynical that I can't enjoy a film like this.

You don't like it? Take the gas pipe!

reply

The gas pipe is too good for him!

A lot of Stiffy's cinema may indeed remind quite a bit of Rohmer's relationship dramas, but certainly not this funny, breezy, nostalgic period snapshot that's exceptionally light on its feet. It's a beautiful film, packed with inspired incidence. Heartfelt without ever overplaying its hand.

To each his own I guess.
I can't imagine hating this film. I also can't imagine hating a film because I wasn't born during that era. I saw this when it first came out and I was a teenager. I loved it instantly. In a few ways it reminds me of ' A Christmas Story' I'm sure it has to do with both of them taking place in the 40s.

I don't know how anyone could hate this movie.

reply

One man's meat and all that... personally I loved it.
