who is the hottest of 'em all?
mirror, mirror on the board? ;)
shareAlec, most definitely.
shareI guess I am in the minority when I think Maurice is by far the most attractive character in the movie. That gorgeous face, golden hair, beautiful eyes. Even in just appearance, there is a sweetness and kindness that oozes out of him. The personality of his character was also the most attractive. He was starving for love. :)
shareAlec Scudder, no question! (Lucky Maurice!)

Scudder saying "I know Sir, Lie Down Sir!!" wet my whistle!!
Academy Awards = the Creme de la Creme of Bull Sh*t
Young Hughie was so ineffably beautiful, and he looks so hot in his riding boots...
BUT...
Young, wild Rupert had such sexual charisma. In real life, he's married with 5 kids, but this guy emanates a lot of animal magnetism (and he has a a very lucky wife!).
I feel that James Wilby is plain compared to the two of them, but he has such great coloring; such beautiful blond hair and striking blue eyes.
As much as I love Hugh Grant, he didn't have that sort of sexual magnetism, I don't think, until he was much older (Bridget Jones).
It's always fun seeing Rupert Graves, but Lestrade is a bit of a step down from Alec Scudder...
There never has been, nor will there ever be, a more beautiful young man on screen than Rupert Graves as Alec Scudder! Can you tell I have a huge crush on him? So alive and self confident, yet so sweet and naive. His laugh is the best, the way he throws his whole head back with abandon! Not to mention his lovely, um, assets, as seen in the hotel scene when he gets out of bed to get dressed! And I mean his overall assets, not just the one!
I also loved James Wilby in this. He had to grow on me, though, because I'll always think of him as the despicable Freddy Nesbitt from Gosford Park! But he is very good looking in his own way (if you go for that tall, British blond thing), and the range of emotions that he shows! So sad for him for most of the movie, but so happy for him in the end!
Hugh Grant is just a baby in this film! I gasped when I first saw him! He's totally gorgeous in this, of course, but I can't like Clive as a character, so that kind of took away from things for me.
It's so funny, I didn't think I would like Scudder as much as I do (considering I was so attached to the lovely Hugh as Clive and Maurice as a couple, but we all know how that turned out in the end). Scudder was just perfect.
Still love Hugh though
You cheated!

I just wanted to mention another thing I love about this movie, and in fact about most movies of this era. It's so refreshing to see good looking young men, with normal, healthy, athletic bodies, not augmented or changed in any way. Both Rupert Graves and James Wilby aren't hugely buff or fake. They are both just so real.
It's so sad to me to think that, if they remade this movie today (heaven forbid), all of the characters would have washboard abs, overly buff arms, and freakishly whitened teeth (and of course, the ladies would all be in designer gowns). While admiring both Rupert and James in this movie, especially the hotel scene, I can't help but lament the way things used to be before everything got "Hollywoodized".
Omg I never realised he was in Gosford Park! Shame on me for having seen Gosford Park a dozen times and never noticing. Maybe it was because Nesbitt was so despicable, and I never take notice of anyone's looks if their character is terribly cruel hahah xD
But next time I'll notice him there for sure...!
In answer to the topic, my favourite of the three was definitely Maurice, in every way. He was honest in his feelings, and also loyal and true. I also loved the contrast of him being a rational adult man with a responsible profession and yet with an idealistic innocence about his chances of spending his life with Scudder. Even young Scudder was more realistic about that than he was. His audacious decision of leaving university for his principles, and doing it so impulsively, made him look adventurous and that was very attractive about him too. All of those things were more than enough for me to love his character the most, his casual handsomeness (unnoticed at first) just an added bonus.

Scudder! Maurice was incredibly lucky to run into such a commonly uncommon and beautiful man who was willing to give up his dream for his love of Maurice.
Gentlemen, Maurice was the red-hottest by a country mile. I think he remained the epitome of male beauty in my mind for over a decade. The others weren't anything to sneeze at, but were nothing compared to the talent, emotional range, and ruddy pulchritude of James Wilby.
I have spoken.
I completely agree with you!! He's the best one

For me, it was a tossup between the young Hugh Grant and the Gorgeous Rupert Graves. What tipped the balance of the scales for me was the fact that Graves played a far more attractive character. James Wilby is not bad looking, but he never really floated my boat.
The more I watch this movie, the more I appreciate the looks of James Wilby. I think it's his final scene with Clive, where he shows up in his trench coat, looking all film-noirish, that did it for me. I love how he looks younger again, but even better then he did when he was at Cambridge. It's like he grew into himself in a way.
But yeah, Rupert still does it for me!
