Okay, so were the 80s were even more homophobic than I'd thought?

I was born in the early 90s, so I missed out on the apparently magical time that was the 80s (it seems like a lot of pop culture now is nostalgic for that decade). However, I do know that HIV / AIDS was a huge (and for way too long, poorly-researched) issue back then, and that the victims of the disease were often ignorantly categorized as gay, heroin-addicted, or black (with some overlap) - but heavy emphasis on the first category. But from what I know of the 80s - and even before and afterward, really - most of the ire directed at "the gays" particularly singled out gay and bisexual men (and you had it even worse if you were a gay man of color). It would seem that people didn't mind lesbians as much. Pop culture - particularly the straight men / characters in it - often fetishizes lesbian relationships, viewing them as "hot."

"So what does any of this have to do with Lethal Weapon?" you might ask.

I bring this up because I watched the movie tonight, after I hadn't seen it for a while. First time I'd watched it was in my teens, and I usually put it on at least once a year. It's a good background movie. Anyway, this time... a line jumped out at me.

When Murtaugh and Riggs are at the shooting range, hashing out whether Dixie could've killed Amanda Hunsaker, Murtaugh says something to the effect of, "So up till now we've assumed that the person in bed with Amanda the night she jumped was a man, but suppose it was a woman?" Then Riggs replies, "Okay. disgusting, but okay."

Ummmm... wtf was this line doing in the movie? It's said so nonchalantly that I never noticed till tonight, but now I'm surprised I could've missed something so pointlessly hateful. Because seriously, what was the purpose of Riggs randomly calling two women in bed together "disgusting"? To show that Riggs strongly disliked (to put it mildly) lesbians? What's the point of having Riggs strongly dislike lesbians? How does that have any meaningful effect on his character or the plot?

All a line like that did was serve to alienate potential members of the audience. I'm a straight woman, but after hearing that line I tried to imagine what how I would've felt if I were a lesbian or bisexual woman in the theater when this movie came out. How I would've felt by a soon-to-be beloved action hero randomly calling me disgusting.

I can't be the only person to be shocked by how hateful and out-of-place this line is.

You said "something to the effect of" but then make your comment as if you got the quote exact.

Murtaugh actually says "Suppose it was Dixie?"

That changes everything that you just complained about. Now the term "disgusting" is not about an entire gender but a specific person. You may still disagree that sleeping with Dixie is disgusting but it is not longer a problem with the homosexual lifestyle in general.

reply

You are wrong. Gibson is a known homophobe, and the line in the movie was CLEARLY intended to state that the notion of homosexual women together was "disgusting." While many homophobes and much of society today still deem 2 women or 2 men behaving intimately and romantically together as "disgusting," these prejudices were even more common in the 80s. That is why it was simply acceptable to put homophobic lines in movies and in every day conversations back then.

Agreed.

Think a lot of 80's stuff had that, it was pretty common then, with Die Hard and Lethal Weapon saying a lot of insults about sexuality.

Think in Mel Gibson's day a lot of men said shit like that and didn't think much of it, times have changed.

reply

It's bizarre how retrograde and reactionary these films are considering how much Richard Donner likes to proclaim his liberal/Democrat-supporting credentials (he'd always insert unsubtle references to some sort of political agenda, like the anti-Apartheid movement and the evils of tuna, into his films, and he got quite teary and self-aggrandising when he spoke of how 'progressive' the Lethal Weapon films supposedly were for casting a black co-lead). I guess like a lot of Hollywood 'libs' he's a complete hypocrite. The homophobia you've identified is pretty egregious, and that's before one factors in his buddy Mel Gibson's horrendous racism, anti-Semitism and misogyny.

The stupid is strong in this one.

lol trying to apply current SJW standards to past films is a hobby of the Left. It is funny to me though that the Director was a SJW of the time though.

Maybe in the future SJW films of today will be ripped apart by either future SJW's for not being "progressive" enough or ripped apart by future conservatives for being "misguided" etc.

reply

By that time they will be “period” films that cannot, by “time period-accuracy” standards be questioned.

Look at the TV movie adaptation of “Scarlett” which was NOTHING like the book and did something as stunningly idiotic as turning Big Sam the dummy fieldhand into successful businessman...IN THE SOUTH...during THE RECONSTRUCTION.

Doesn’t get any more stupid than that for SJW STUPIDITY.

reply

It won't stop them though!

Haven't seen Scarlett but I am not surprised. I see what they did in films like Lincoln and TV shows like Hell On Wheels. They change whatever they want so they can preach the message that suits them. All at the expense of creativity and entertainment.

reply

No kiddin’.

They also cry and point fingers at plain ol’ MEN like us and blame us for the utter failure of “Ghostbusters”.

Well excuse the sh*t outta me...but what are you gonna do about it, pass a law mandating men be forced to watch CHICK FLICKS until they make a profit?

reply

I was on the original IMDB during the GB remake turmoil. Oh wow did the SJW's have a problem with being challenged. The trailer was awful and the only funny thing about the whole film seemed to be the guy who plays Thor. Yes that's right not only a man in a chick flick but a man who isn't even a stand up comic/comedic actor.

Yet he outshone the women who supposedly make their money from being "funny".

Yeah that black woman Lesley or whatever her name is attacking people, mostly men for the film failing. Yep, I feel so ashamed, let me watch that shit film over and over until I learn some lesson lol.

reply

Let’s hope they learn their lesson: don’t hijack a known franchise expecting it to succeed.

ESPECIALLY IF IT COSTS OVER $100 MILLION.

Last rumor I heard about the “Logan’s Run” remake...the Hunger Games folks were gonna give it a female lead.

Ummm...hello...it’s called LOGAN’s Run. Are you going to change the title altogether and make all the sandman WOMEN too?

reply

I don't think they care. They have their agenda and they will push it until everyone is converted or their films lose so much money that the powers that be just refuse to finance them anymore.

Oh they will just name the chick Logan. It fits right in with their gender fluid society.

The lesson which they need to learn the most, but again won't is don't attack your audience.

reply

I don't care how offensive this sounds but maybe Danny Glover's character was supposed to be a conservative and therefore think homosexuality is wrong. There are people who think that way cause of a Christian upbringing. The Bible itself actually does say that it's wrong specifically in the book of Romans and the book of 1 Corinthians. I know a lot of people who are Christians that insist that you don't have to listen to Paul and insist he's an extremist. But then there is the fact Jesus himself came down from Heaven, blinded Paul, and told him if he wanted his sight back he'd have to start following his commands. I know religion isn't something people like talking about on the internet but perhaps Danny Glover's character had a Christian upbringing and that's why he thinks that way.

reply

Riggs said it. Not Danny Glover's character. And yeah, the Bible is stupid and regressive about a lot of stuff. Here's how to treat your slave. It's okay to rape a woman but if she refuses to marry her rapist she must be stoned to death. Don't get a tattoo or eat lobster. lmao

Maybe it was there because they thought it was disgusting.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I'm so glad that somebody else noticed this and was as appalled by it as I was. I found your post here because I was looking to see if the line was written that way or if it was something Gibson "ad-libbed" because of his religious fanatic homophobia. Any clue which it was?

I'm a heterosexual male (I know it shouldn't matter but to let you know what perspective I was watching from) and I had seen this movie a dozen times before I noticed it. Weird what we just accepted back then.

Thanks again.
