Frank is scarier than the Cenobites!

Frank Cotton is the main villain of this film, and his presence creeped me out each time he was on the screen. much more than the cenobites in my opinion.

Even through Pinhead is on all the posters he really isn't the focal point of Hellraiser at all and they had no idea Pinhead would catch the public's imagination.

Goes to show you can't knowing create a horror icon or a recurring villain for a franchise.

Honestly, in the first movie anyway, the cenobites are almost antiheroes. They really only kill the main villain of the movie, Frank.

Must agree, something about him makes him creepy.

I think the second half is where the film suffered. It went from a very morbid plot between Frank and Julia to the focus more on a cheesy monster flick what with the scream queen running away from that hellion. That being said, had the story just been focused on Frank this wouldn't be Hellraiser but Angel Heart.

It's not like you can just pluck the cenobites out of the story and have everything still play out the same.

I can see where the OP is coming from. Frank and Julia are intentionally despicable. As the series goes on and the cenobites feature more predominantly they get more and more creepy - Hellraiser III really has some truly scary moments!

I often dream that I am in the cenobites' world and I have to make it through each "film" before Pinhead will let me go. I can almost feel the pain of the hooks going under my skin while asleep! Truly scary.
