How is this movie only a 7 on IMDB?

For a horror film, a 7 is pretty good on this site. Even though ratings on IMDb have completely gone to crap, I'd say this film deserves the 7. Typically, anything rated above a 7 on this site, even with biased fanboy/troll votes, is basically a good film worth seeing.

I'd say 7 is fair. I gave it an 8. It's above average in a genre that isn't for everyone.

Part of it is that people have different ratings systems. Some people may think a film where they did most things right but they didn't personally feel too high on is worth a 5, while I would give a well made film with a coherent plot a 6 if I didn't enjoy, a 7 if I thought it was all right and an 8 if I liked it.

Some have binary ratings system 1 or a 10, no variations.

As for summer blockbusters. Nearly all of these will come back to the field the further hey get from release. This one has been rated over a near 30 year period as a 7.1. I'd say the general concensus is that it is a good film and aged pretty well.

It's a horror film, for starters. That's a -3 points deduction right off on most movie rating sites.

I think it has to do with the ideas behind the movie itself rather than the genre.

"Hellraiser" was released during the heyday of the slasher movie craze and a good number of the trailers marketed it as such. I was only a year old back in 1987, but I can imagine an audience going into the theater expecting a slasher film involving a man with pins nailed into his head where thrown through the loop when they got an incredibly dark and incredibly visceral gothic thriller that had something deep to say about our almost fetishistic desire for pleasure through violence.

It's a 7 because that's the average of opinions of reviewers of it on imdb.

It wasn't that good imo.
