'What a Wonderful World' scene

What a great scene...very chilling

Check out the start of the film Rescue Dawn. It has slow motion archive aircraft-mounted camera footage of the Laos village bombings accompanied by a very moving piano score. It is very surreal.

Its a great scene in the movie it is sad though

Does anyone know what the story is in Levinson deciding to put this song into this movie? Everyone acknowledges that it was a brilliant choice, but how did he decide to do it? The song was a bomb in the US before it was used in the movie (sold fewer than 1000 records), so it would have been hard for the movie people to even know that it existed.

"it would have been hard for the movie people to even know that it existed."

Well, no, that isn't the case. Although the song was not a hit in the U.S. in the year (1968) that it was first released, it WAS a big hit in the U.K. Then a few years later (early '70s) it took hold in the U.S. and charted quite high. It was very well known by the time the movie was made.

I know the song came out after the film was set but it works so well - The director acknowledges this in the DVD Production Diary.

I was sent this video via an email and happened to find it on youtube - something else that fits this great song - hope you enjoy it.

It's a bit of a personal statement, but I hope that it appeals to universal sentiments as well.

Hey jcosyn

Really enjoyed your version of the song, and the slideshow was cool too.

Yes it was a personal statement but it is also universal. I've put a couple of slideshows up on Youtube myself, but am looking into putting vocals onto them too eventually, when I sort out the computer!!! Keep up the Great work!!

Does anyone know how the movie makers came to use this particular song? It fits so well, but was virtually unknown at the time that the movie came out. It was a bomb in the US when it was initially cut. I would be interested in knowing who thought it up. The history of its inclusion.

In dvd-extras Levinson said he heard the song in radio in Thailand (if I remember correctly) while filming or scouting locations.

Yes that was a very good scene to watch and I enjoyed it but it was wild when the bombs started to go off though.
